Neutral switch question?

I had posted earlier about the 76 srv200 failing to start. nothing happens at all, no accessories go on, lights nothing. This looks similar to all of the symptoms indicative of a neutral safety switch malfunction. My question is...when the safety switch is not working does power still come to wires heading to the ignition switch. And...can you turn on accessories while the boat is not starting when the safety switch is broken. Any replies woudl be greatly appreciated, i think this could help me solve the problem
thanks again
corey

Re: Neutral switch question?

The netural saftey switch would normaly only affect the starter from turning the motor

All your other electric is on different circuts

There are many different circut breakers and some what hidden fuses that have been used over the years :)

You need to start back at the battery and follow the cable and see were the power stops

AND the BLACK cable (ground) can just as likely be the problem

tommays

Re: Neutral switch question?

Normally the neutral safety switch is in line going back from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid so you should have 12v at the key unless blown fuse, tripped braker?

Re: Neutral switch question?

that all makes sense then, i figured that the neutral safety switch would not be the problem. but i do have a ground wire that is is split, one end is connected to the engine block and the other is just sitting loose and unconnected to anything. do you think that this loose wire is possibly the problem and if so where would u guess i attach it to. thanks again for the helpful replys
corey

Where is this loose ground wire? If it's under the dash then it could be a problem as all of your gauges and lights still need a ground.

Re: Neutral switch question?

the wire is kind of in a "y" formation. there are two wires, gray and black, they are connected to somnething in the engine compartment. they split up just before the battery and one is connected with the negative cable at the battery and the other just hangs loose in the battery compartment. i hope that isnt too confusing of a description, it is hard to know the proper terms to use to describe electrical things. thanks
corey

Are these wires seperate from the wiring harness?

i think so but i am not sure because i do not know where the wiring harness is. would it be between the motor and the transom?

What does the someting look like in the engine compartment? Is the gray wire in the engine compartment connected to a cylindrical thing above the carbs?

Re: Neutral switch question?

I'm sorry, I was heading wrong. Start with making sure all battery connections are tight and clean. Does it click click click when you try to start? You really have to start checking voltages through the system. 12v at wire from battery to ignition. 12v at key when key start. 12v across pos and neg at solenoid. if nothing works up in the driver's seat, I would think you are not getting pos or ground up front.

Re: Neutral switch question?

yea i dont hear a click click click at all, there is nothing! i kind of thought that somehow the power coming from the positive terminal is not reaching the ignition switch. also today the power trim was doing stuff when i pressed the buttons. i am going to trace the pos from the battery to the ig switch and hopefully i will find the problem. are their fuses or circuit breakers that would break the connection? thanks
corey
