I am attempting to replace switch one(2 photo's red/black). Was set switch 2 (white ball on end)and told it superceds 1, but I'm not sure how as it does not fit correctly. I see that switch 2 is used as my neutral switch from reverse to neutral... Perhaps I have been sent the wrong part?

Thanks

photos 1 and 2 appear to be neutral safety switches, photo 3 looks like a shift interupt switch

ok so a little more background, the boat would not engage neutral once it had been put in gear, i saw that the neutral safety switch was cracked and figured that was the problem...was this not a correct ?

neutral safety is in the control box to prevent you from starting the engine in gear
shift interupt is what momentarily stalls the motor to come out of gear only in the water

right, i was not longer getting that stall from forward gear to neutral, it appeared that the switch was in the correct place to stall the engine from forward gear to neutral,(mounted to the transom with the shift cables), i know this is ancient equiptment and design, i will post some more photo's of the layout tomorrow to clarify...I appreaciate your response.

The neutral safety switch will keep it from starting while in gear,,,, not stop it from coming out of gear. The switch with the roller ball is the shift interrupt switch, if it's bad it will keep the drive from coming out of gear.

It actually sounds like both switches need replacing, neutral safety switch since it's cracked, shift interrupt switch because it's not stalling the engine and allowing the drive gears to unmesh and come out of gear.

Look at the stickies at the top of this forum, one of the stickies explains the shift interrupt system and how it works. The shift interrupt switch needs to be adjusted for proper operation,,, needs adjustment after it's installed, bend the arm for proper engagement. Find manual #1 at 4share and download the manual, it will give you the info needed.

Yes, but Mercruiser still uses the same arrangement for the shift interrupt switch. They use a different switch, same principal though.

Here's what I cobbled up to replace the NLA shift interrupt switch on my 72' 140HP
