When I bought this rig, 1986 Thompson Cutlass, first of last season I was told by the original owner it was top notch and never overheated.
I have been chasing a very rough idle on it this season. I have replaced the carb with a new one, new plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor. Reset the timing and adjusted the air screw best was still a very rough idle. I then finally check for a vacuum leak with starting fluid and low and behold there was the issue or so I thought. All but 2 bolts were tight to torque spec but two at the rear of the engine were nearly just hand tight. I then did a compression check and 3 cylinders are at 125psi and one is at 65psi. This is when I noticed some RTV on the block.
So I started digging. Removed the exhaust manifold (what a pain that was) and the intake manifold. Decided to also pull the head to look it over and holy silicon batman. Turns out this engine did have some issues at some point in the past. Silicon all over the head bolts and down in the the head bolt threads. Also has a cracked head in the low psi cylinder. Also some JB weld on the valve cover.
I have started searching for a good head and coming up empty in the 470 area of things. Anyone know if the Ford 460 heads for a truck are a direct bolt on?
