A friend e-mailed the other day and forwarded a post from a Smith Mountain Lake fishing forum. Gander Mountain has 5 12-14' boat trailers that have a defective coupler. They were attached too far back on the tongue when they welded them; thus, the coupler would not attach to a ball.

They are $599 trailers and they are selling them for $200!! I went bought one yesterday. :D We'll cut the welds and re-attach the coupler. The paint on these trailers was not the best and surface rust has appeared. A little sanding and primer and a nice new coat of black oil-based Rust-Oleum should take care of it. It should haul the Sea King just fine.

Structurally the trailers are good, just need a little TLC. I'll need to install a jack. If you live anywhere near Roanoke, VA they are a good deal. 4 left.......

I'll post a pic when I get the coupler fixed. :)

New 12-14" Boat Trailer - $200!!
Seems kind of expensive for a 14 inch long boat.

I had been checking Craigslist in this area but we don't have nearly the number of boaters that are in Florida!!

I've looked at the trailers at my local Gander and I wasn't impressed. Thin metal, fenders that won't last 2 years and crappy tires. A brand new trailer with surface rust already?

If I bought one I surely wouldn't use it in salt water, and would be sure to keep it stored in a garage.

Jim - I agree that these trailers aren't worth the $600 they were asking. But for $200, well worth it to me. I will sand, prime and paint with two coats of Rust Oleum oil-based (black) and pretty sure I won't be using it in salt water. :)

I will upgrade where necessary and if it doesn't last long then only $200..... I think it'll handle pulling my 12' Sea King. ;)
