well i just got my 1st boat motor for free! its a '57 evinrude fleetwin, and i have some probaby easy questions for ya'll
1. hard to start and wont idle low.. so i bought a new carb. overhaul kit from here
2. doesnt pump water but impeller is good, is the powerhead plugged?
3. bought new impeller anyways but its huge compared to old one (~2.5" diameter vs ~1.5") read the housing could have been swapped?
4. pressure tank leaks like crazy.....
5. where can i get all of these powerhead seals that everyone says to replace?

sorry for all the questions but im new to boat motors. i am studying to be a automotive mechanic so i can technically relate. i can get some photos of the impellers if needed

1. Have you checked the spark and compression?
2. Are you running it in a barrel, water needs to be just below exhaust port.
3. What part number impeller did you get, 277181 replaced by 434424?
4. You can still get parts for the pressure tanks, where is it leaking?
5. You need to explain which powerhead seals you are talking about.

You can buy parts here at iboats.

Here's a link to parts http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/ITEM_2831/ITEM_283100001.htm

Check spark and compression as Daviet mentioned, his other info is good to.

After you do the above, you said you bought a carb rebuild kit. Did you rebuild it? Sounds like your low speed side of the carb is plugged somewhere.

Fix impeller, water pump, check block for blockage.

That's a starting point.

Re: "new" 1957 fleetwin 7.5

spark seams to be blue and good, compression is ~90 while pull starting which i assume is good.
yea i know enough to run it in the barrel but something is plugged. should i flip the powerhead upside down and let it soak in CLR over night to eat all the varnish or is that gonna hurt something?
i just bought the right size impeller for the plastic housing on marineengine.com
i also ordered all new seals for most of the motor/gas tank when i got the impeller.
i am currently in the middle of rebuilding the carb.... what is the "base" setting for it when i put it back in?

Low speed needle is 1.5 turns out from lightly seated, high speed 3/4 turns out from lightly seated. Turn them in, CW, until you hear a mild backfire or she wants to die, then turn it back out 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn will be the ideal setting.

Bet you wish you had a nickel for every time you've written that.

Are you talking about the roll pin for the seal assy on the top of the drive shaft? Just drive out the broken part and install a new one.

Re: "new" 1957 fleetwin 7.5

well i got everything all buttoned up and it worked and fired up perfectly and ran like a dream! then i turned it off to put it in a bucket and when i when to start it again i broke the starter recoil somehow....... so i tore it apart and it looks like i broke the "starter pawl" dam! back to marineengine.com to pay for $10 shipping :(

oh and my pressure gas tank still leaks! i replaced the fuel tank main gasket.... would the fuel pump diaphragm be the cause of this? oh and a side note is it only leaks from the primer button. please help me once and for all haha

Hello again truck. You may want to just get a complete used pull starter assembly. You can usually get one one ebay or aomci.org for about $20-$30. You can just bolt the whole thing on and use the broken one as a spare/parts assembly, or vise versa. As for the pressure tank, you can buy reseal kit, but you may want to think about converting your motor to a fuel pump which uses a modern single line set up. It's not very hard and works great. Here are some links that may help. Perhaps you can make a gasket of your own for the primer button, but I'm not sure.

Re: "new" 1957 fleetwin 7.5

thank you, but for simplicity i would rather keep and restore them both. im going to try the recoil thing since it is only a little piece that it needs, and for the gas tank im goin to give it a good look over.

Re: "new" 1957 fleetwin 7.5

have you resealed the pressure tank? motor wont run well , if at all if the tank is loosing pressure. dont give up on it! if you have a single line tank and primer bulb, you can gravity feed the motor for testing. just unhook both the fuel line, and the air line from the connector and improvise on reconnecting just the fuel line to the modern tank. set the tank on a stand thats higher than the carb....pump the bulb, check for leaks and give it a try.

Hmm... I have 2 new gaskets on the tank (rubber diaphragm and the cork main seal) I don't have any of them other things... Is there another way to check tank pressure?
