I recently acquired a Johnson sea-horse 9.5hp. motor that had never been run.. yes never. this is a NEW motor from 1973. I purchased it from a friend who got it from an older gentleman. he had purchased it new, had a stroke, and was never able to use it. All the hoses are perfect, the "inspected by" sticker is still on the lower unit and I even received the owners manual (also looks like a museum piece).

My question is.... Is this thing worth anything as far as being an "antique" and if so how do I find out how much? or... do I just hook up a gas tank to geter and get'er running!?

Any help would be appreciated.

it's not an antique, but a darn good motor, will have to have new impellar before starting, as the one in it will disintergrate, on stating, it's rubber, and 33 years old.

Post some pictures! I'm curious to see what it looked like brand new the year I was born...

I wouldn't run it. That motor is a one-of-a-kind. I'd save it. In 20 years it would be worth thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars.

Ya never know what someone would pay for a one-of-a-kind engine like that.

I just bought a 1997 Force 15hp in the same condition as your Johnson, and I already own a 1981 Johnson 9.9hp that is still virgin from any tools ... except for lower unit oil changes. If you'r a fisherman I would say use it since no other modern outboard out there will troll as smooth and slow as one of those.

But prior to using it I would suggest to have it inspected for rust in cylinders and/or crankshats or if you plan to do it yourself use appropriated products to soak it all for a while prior to trying to start it.

Good luck
