New 2008 Bayliner discovery 192 transom leak

I just bought a brand new 2008 Bayliner discovery 192 2 weeks ago and had it in the shop yesterday to get GPS,fishfinder, professionally installed. The technician had to drill 2 small holes in the transom in order to mount the sonar transducer. Once the 2 holes were drilled, water started pouring out of the holes. He immediately stopped all work on my boat since this was very alarming as the holes were only drilled to 3/4 of an inch and did not go throught the transom. My boat has only been in the water for a total of 4 hours. I am extremely concern about this problem and I want to return the boat to the dealer and get a new boat. As anyone ever experience this type of problem? Any suggestion on how to resolve this problem with the dealer would be much appreciated. The photo included shows the 2 holes in the transom; The photo was taken 15 minutes after the water started coming out.

i have the technician write down what exactly happened. and all that. so you can show that to the dealer. just to prove that it wasnt you playing around and messing with the boat. . im not sure what else to do tho

There should be no water inside your transom. I don't know if the Bayliner uses composite or wood in the transom, if wood then you have a legitemate complaint against the manufacturer. If composite and no foam (should not be) you still have whatever distance between the holes and bottom of transom filled with water....

All in all, not a good finding.

I just drilled two holes in the transom of my 15 yr old Renken, and it was dry. They should be made, and accessories added not to leak. Most likely motor mounting or I/O pass thru leak.

I see similar comments about some of the Stingrays inside the Stingray forum when people go to add smart tabs. The conclusion is it seems to be left over moisture from the building process.

Thanks for your input. I have just finished talking with the dealer and he says that he want to repair the leak or whatever it is. I am sure that repair can be done once the source of ingress is located but at the same time I am worry about the potential damage that will occur over the long run since the inside of the transum will never be completely dry again. This will most likely result in delamination of the transom. How can I protect myself against that. Is it reallistic for to ask for a brand new boat or a complete refund.

That's too bad. I had thought that Bayliner had really gotten things under control. There should never be an issue like this not even once. Hopefully Bayliner, and not the dealer, can find out what's going on. I find it very hard to believe it's left over moisture from the manufacturing process as was stated above regarding some recent Stingray issues.

don't get the cart before the horse. give the dealer a chance to find the problem, and show it to you.

Check owners warranty information. Did the boat come with a hull warranty???

I am not alone anymore, I now have 2 other guys with Bayliner boat bought from the same dealer. Have a read at this thread. It is classic and you won't believe what you read.

I think someone has to explain exactly how that transom is built in the different sections. Is it a honeycomb construction throughout or at least in the section water was trapped in? What about how it seals inside? Is there or isn't there wood in the transom - where is it and where isn't it?

Bayliner needs to explain this to you so you can understand what might have happened. If they can't (or won't) VERY SPECIFICALLY explain the construction then I think we can assume they have a build issue they are hiding and most folks who drill into the transom will find it. They just know more don't drill than do so they can get away with it.

Don't beat on Bayliner only for this, i've read similar threads about higher end new boats as well. I think to save materials, reduce weight and eliminate wood some new construction techniques were used and haven't worked out too well. Water gets into places it shouldn't and if no way out it stays there. That's why to me it's more important to have a design that always lets water OUT than one which relys on water never getting in!

Repair it ? how do you repair water trapped in the hull? there's no way to get it all out, if it is in fact a leak,repairing it wont allow any more water in...but what about the water that's already in there ? Due to the process used in construction , theres no way it was "trapped" during construction,and if the water came out under pressure when the holes were drilled that means it may of migrated throughout the hull......not good. So to answer your question: Yup,if your honest,and tell a prospective buyer about the water encapsulated in the hull....Me..I'd Run from that sale.

I have been in touch with Bayliner and they will not give me a new boat. Bayliner says that it is a time consuming repair but an easy fix!!!!! The boat has been at the repair shop for a week now and I have not heard anything back. The only good thing out of this, is that the hull comes with an life-long limited warranty. I am concerned as to how I am going to monitor the water problem once the said repair are done. I guess I will have to drill more holes in the hull. Also now that winter is coming, if there is still water inside then I might get some damage cause by expanding ice as the hull freezes.

VS - Not to be negative.....But, it will be to your advantage if you have Bayliner explain exactly HOW there going to remedy this problem......step by step how its done....by my figuring the only way to insure the hull is water free is to separate the lower hull from the upper...(shoebox) and replace the filler...or if its not foam but Davinacell remove all water..let it dry-out then replace top....thats not an "easy" fix, so it will be interesting to see how they plan on remedying this.......

hey victoria......sorry to hear about this....i have quite a few thinga to say....but first....i used to live on a 43 footer in toovey bay and then we moved it to the esq side of the johnson street bridge......i used to be on ckda and cfms...(now called the ocean).....fantast part of the world there.....my ngirl and i go there for getaway weekends and stay at the laurl point inn....we watch the sea planes come in and gout out for hours from our balcony........


ok...i read all the other thread...cudos to b-liner for using pt wood and yes it does come from the lumber yard wet.......it MUST be dryed or resin wont stick to it....(its wet....but there is a difference between moisture content in the wood and enough water in the wood to make a stream coming from it)

there is a lot of distrubing things here......but lets see what the dealer will do.....btw...its not the dealers fault.....but they will act as the go between to the manufacturere for you.

and as far as water being left there from the manufacturing process........um....no.

the only water used in the manufacturing process of a boat yard is the water in the staffroom cooler.......thats it....no water to clean....they use aceoitone.

ill be watching this one......i wanna see whats goin on...as i was truly hoping b-liner had fixed thier issues........but being that it is happening on several boats.......there is somthing really wrong with there tollerances.
