I just got done watching the new 2011 brp video on etec outboards. There are some very interesting facts on this dvd.One thing that really caught my attention was the emission difference between 4strokes and direct injected outboards.According to what the brp reps and engineers were saying, the epa is looking very hard into fixing the way 4strokes run as they run very rich compared to direct injected outboards that run very lean. What the problem is according to the epa,4strokes are making alot of carbon monoxide, compared to direct injected motors making very little to almost none because of how lean they run.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?Maybe we are headed into the direct injected future of all engines.I know the new ford f150 has 4 new engines and they are all direct injected.Plus i have seen quite a few new cars that are doing it also.Is it possible that one day everything may be direct injected? If this is going to be the case[Of course if this happens]I wonder if the whole u.s will eliminate the use of 4strokes and carb 2strokes and just go to direct injected engines including cars and all others engines.Anything is possible. They say the emissions is way better, also the fuel economy,They also say they run quieter.Would love to hear some thoughts about this whole thing.[PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THIS IS A VIDEO I JUST WATCHED,SO I'M JUST RELAYING WHAT IT EXPLAINED].

I would be cautious as that DVD is likely intended as a sales tool. In their other advertising for the e-TEC motors, BPR claims that their direct-injection 2 cycle motor creates less polution because the 2 cycle oil is burned, rather than dumped into the storm drain, as happens with 20% of the drained oil from 4 cycle motors. I find that to be a twisted statistic.

I also have not heard any claims about the lean-burn technology of direct injection motors. Years ago we had stratified charge motors, which had a lean burn (Honda CVCC was the most successful), but those are gone.

On the Superbowl commericals, some cars were claimed to get 40MPG, which was touted as a great achievement. However, my 1980 Datsun 200sx had an EPA rating of 40MPG on the highway, and my tests confirmed that it did achieve it. This was due to the lean burn NAPS-Z engine it had. Subseuently, car makers did not follow up on that technology, for some reason. I never had any issues with the power, acceleration or relaibility of that engine, and I put 193K miles on it before the waterpump bearing failed causing overheat and head warpage.

Diesel engines are all direct injection, and come in 2 cycle and 4 cycle configurations.

BTW direct injection motors will are either 2 cycle or 4 cycle, depending on design.

Hey chris i have thought of that as i watched the dvd, that it is a sales tool also. But from all the people here who have talked about the etec motors without watching the dvd claim their motors run alot quieter. There is alot of people here on this forum that are convinced the etec outboards are the best and run the cleanest. They do alot of research from what the video showed. The also tested all their line of outboards one at a time for an hr and a half,15-300hp.They claim that the calif carbon monoxide rating must be at 16 or less. They claim most 4strokes do achieve that. They said in their words that their etecs just run cleaner then that and make less carbon monoxide. So i was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on the situation.Who knows maybe they do or maybe they don't,but one thing is for sure they have way more power then any 4stroke outboard,so that is a plus, also most of the bigger outboards are much lighter and no service for 3 yrs is awesome.I don't know of any 4stroke that can say that.

I have never before heard that direct injection allowed a leaner burn in the combustion chamber. The way I understood lean burn is that too lean of a gas-air ratio is harder for the spark plug to ignite. That is why the stratified charge motors were invented. These have a rich mixture near the plug and a leaner mixture everywhere else. The plug easily fires the rich mixture, and the subsequent flame continues to burn the lean mxture.

I would not know why an e-TEC would be able to run leaner, unless it is designed (somehow) to make the mixture near the plug richer. Those stratified charge motors has a seperate valve in the cylinder head that admitted the rich charge, while the normal intake valve admitted the lean charge.

I guess the e-TEC fuel injector could be designed to do the same thing, however, I never heard it explained that way.
