The real problem is that it was to stealthy, they couldnt even find themselves. No one was killed in this mishap, so that it why it is so funny. There could be nothing more horrible than drowning in a tube or alive and no one can get to you. You have to be a special breed of person to get into a boat that is designed to sink. Just think of it this way, we hate it when we hit something in our boats right, well how terrifying would it be to hit something while you are submerged.

Built by, operated by humans, thus-not perfect.

But,

It would seem like a two billion dollar boat would have systems in place, and a crew cautious enough, not to let this happen.

the USS sanfrancisco crew got shafted, they hit a seamount while submerged that wasnt on their deficient charts, couple that with a few other deficiencies and WHACK.
on the USS memphis, depends on which one your disscussing.
will be interesting to read how the HMS astute got grounded.
some years back DDG51 grounded in the york river, that was a fun time that never made the press.

There was a little press here and there outside of the Navy Times. The few articles I read made more reference to the fact that the CO who was relieved of command was female than the actual grounding. A couple of years before that I remember another DDG that knocked off it's sonar dome.

No matter who was a fault at the time of a grounding this is one time gravity is reversed and s**t does flow uphill. It is always the CO who is ultimately found to be at fault.

The account that I read said that they weren't even using the best charts that they had ON BOARD....but I wasn't there, and their job is a lot tougher than mine is....

The one that got hung up on a reef off Florida.

I'm sure that there are lots of things that we never hear about....and probably better that we don't....;)

lots of things happen in the military that doesnt look like hollywood.
its what happens when you go play with equipment made by the lowest bidder.
radios that dont work, allison gensets that die suddenly.
whiz bang weapons that occasionally fail to go whiz OR bang.

SSD decade
On 17 January 1950, while steaming out of Norfolk, Virginia, through Hampton Roads, Missouri went hard aground on Thimble Shoals. Her momentum forced her well into the shallows, raising her hull several feet above its normal waterline. Freeing the ship involved offloading ammunition, supplies and fuel and the concentrated efforts of many tugs, dredges and divers. Missouri finally returned to the channel on 1 February.

Or a skipper and communications officer that decide it's OK to go to sea with only 1 of 3 flakey crypto sets running, and air conditioning down in the radio shack. (read that, cooled by sea air)

Then it's discovered that there's no certified crypto repairman on board, so a bright ET3 is asked to service the down crypto set, without being allowed to see the top secret maintenance manual. When they finally got my short timer's uncontrollable laughter under control, they let me use the manual. I fixed the dirty (salty) switch and saved the day.

At that time there was no doubt in my military mind that I was not a military man.

at the time of the DDG51 grounding in the york river, about 1991, the commading officer was male. were no females on board then.
what an afternoon that was.
started out early when the weapons pier crew dropped a harpoon missile on the pier then wanted to continue loading it.
then the fire in #3 switchboard, then the failure of genset 2, genset 1 was simply out of commision, then the crash into the weapons pier, then we almost sank a tug due to some mis communication on the US navy's most advanced DDG.
then the failure again of #2 genset that left us addrift in the river where we got pushed aground.
then heading for the glouchester bridge, the bridge master was adamant he wasnt going to open and our captian said ok, suit your self and we headed towards the bridge at about 20 knots.
he finally shut down traffic and opened.
then at NOB we dang near sank another tug.
was a good day.
however, for all the foulups on a first of its class ship, we would have followed capt Morgan anywhere. he was first and foremost our captian. our navigation officer was later the commanding officer on the USS Cole when it got hit in yemen.
lucky for the USS Cole's crew he was as anal with damage control as capt Morgan.

trust me folks, I been out of the US Navy for a while but I still chat with some of the young sailors and recuits from this area, your getting the best money can buy for crews.

the equipment however, is still from the lowest bidder.

its still amazing the USS Cole stayed afloat with that much damage, I still cry when I think of the lives lost and the actions taken.

I was referring to the grounding that occurred in the Spring of 2007 . I forgot about the 1991 incident. If my memory serves me correct the CO at that time was Cmdr. Edith McClure.

Was assigned to the DDG3 John King in the winter of 1980 and was going to ride her to New Orleans for Mardi Gras but she clipped a quarantine bouy coming in to NFK and messed up one of her screws. She went out for a run to access the damage and the stern fishtailed back and forth about five feet. The HT's shop was back in the stern and everything bounced around like crazy. Missed the fun in New Orleans but got to experience a 18" snow storm in Norfolk. Not nearly as much fun.

Now folks these sailors may have just pulled shallow to get in some good fishing when in the excitement of the catching the tide rolled out and left em high and dry. . :D
