Greetings All! I have a brand new Seaswirl 190 BR with a 4.3L Volvo Penta. This past weekend while continuing to break-in the engine(approx 5 hrs.) I was in a fairly sharp turn at around 45 mile an hour and the warning horn went off. It was pretty loud in the cockpit between the engine and the wind and I could not determine if it was a steady beep or intermittent. I quickly checked all the gauges, did not see anything out of the order, but decided to back off the throttle. As soon as I did the beep ceased. I would have to say the horn sounded just after the apex of my turn, and I cannot say for sure that had I continued at the same speed that the warning wouldn't have ceased as I straightened out.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is it a problem at all or simply gravity at work and no oil getting to the pickup?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Stupid question, but have you since checked the oil level in the engine? Was it correct?

Yes, The oil level was checked before heading out on this particular occasion, as I have been keeping a watchful eye on the oil during the break-in period as I have read and been told that the engine will likely consume more oil during this time. The level appeared ok, although now I am questioning myself as to how long the engine had been sitting cold before checking.

While we are on the subject of oil levels...When is the best time to check the oil levels on a boat? I would think that when she sits on the trailer she is most level, however normally the engine would be cold at this point. In the water I would think that the stern is sitting low.

Check the oil when the boat is in the water. Cold engine is fine. but allow the oil to settle for a few minutes the check the oil.
You also don't just pull the stick out and look at it.
Pull it out wipe it off, then push it all the way back in, pull it out then check it.

45mph, hard turn, only 5 hours on the engine.......... Nice easy breakin I see.

This much I knew. :)

Actually I have been taking it fairly easy. This was a rare run where I wanted to get a feel for her in an aggressive turn.

Of everything I've read and heard about the break-in, the major constraint seemed to be involving length of time you remained at any give speed particularly WOT. I would say, I would be terribly surprised if on this run I was at high speed/rpm for any more than two minutes. Which according to my manual would be acceptable after the first two hours.

Any further experience or opinions that anyone has would be greatly appreciated, as I find the manual very vague on what to do and what not to do...other than what I have mentioned above but perhaps that has already been dealt with in another thread?

If it's brand new, I'd let the dealer know, see if they'll check it out under warranty.

May was well take advantage of that when you can!
