There you go, a perfect example of a 3" a cooling system in good shape. Keep that raw water flowing at a maximum and it should stay that way. You may be able to get away with a weak impeller in a 4" but not the 3". Nice boat BTW:).

sorry for jumping in. was there a year when they stopped using 3" and started using 4". my 1983 470 came with a 4'' and i bought the boat off the oringinal owner and he said he did no alterations

The engine was originally designed with the 3", and IMHO the 3" exchanger is adequate, if your cooling system is in tip top shape. The 3" does not allow much room for error, if your impeller becomes worn or the exchanger dirty you could be in for some trouble. I believe it would be wise to replace it at least every other year.
Replace the exchanger every other year ??????

I just put a bungy cord from the steering wheel to an anchor point during trailering to stop the movement your referring to.
