New battery question...

Hey everybody, I've got a question...

I just purchased a new battery yesterday from Wal-mart, it is a Everstart deep cycle marine battery with 115 amp hrs, and 160 reserve capacity.(part # 27DC-6)

I went fishing today for about 4 hours, and didn't use the trolling motor very much, but the battery performed fine.

My question is this.... When I got home at about 11:30am, I put the battery on charge. The charger that I'm using is a Black and Decker fully automatic "smart" battery charger. This is the little $30 charger that Wal-Mart sells. I assumed that it would charge up quickly but by six pm this evening it still was charging, and had not registered that the battery was full. This is the same charger that I was using for my old battery, so I know that it works.

Is this normal? Should it take longer? Am I doing something wrong?

Please help me, I'm still new to boating and I don't want to mess up my new battery.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: New battery question...

Is the capacity of the new battery the same as the old one. If its bigger, it will take longer to charge than the old one. Whats the output of the charger? Probably 6 amps or so. Was the battery fully charged when you went fishing? How long the motor run and at what speed determines how much it discharged the battery. We have no real data to go on so afraid we (I'm) not much help. As an example, I can run my MinnKota PD pretty hard all day it with a 6A Quest its charged and ready to go by early morning.

Re: New battery question...

I would suspect that the new battery wasn't charged when you went out fishing. I bought the same battery several weeks ago off the shelf and with a similar (6amp smart charger) it took overnight to complete the charge on it.

Thanks guys, I put it back on the charger for a few hours today, and if finally got charged. I guess it will just take a while. Thanks again.

Re: New battery question...

That is the reason I recommend charger of at least 10 amps. For large deep cycle batteries 20 amps is better. I have one of the same type chargers you have but mine is a 35 amp. With a battery that has been discharged quite a bit if I select 35 amps it will start a 35 amps and steadly decline. When it gets below 20 amps it will switch to the 20 amp, then 10 and end on the 2 amp scale. This put a large part of the charge back rapidly but still allows unit to use the 2 amp charge at the end to make sure fully charged without over charging.

Bingo. Look for a manufacture date on the battery, it was probably made several months ago. In the mean time it has been sitting in hot warehouses losing it's charge.
