Not sure about a backwash as most of the y pipes have a flapper valve that acts like a check valve. My first Regal had the exhaust tube and there was a different sound as it came onto plane, but not annoying and I think all the big block mercs have the tube from the factory. The main difference between them is the exhaust on the merc is smaller after the y pipe then flows down into the foot and through the prop. Volvo goes from the y pipe to a wider oval design and out an even wider area through the cavitation plate which I think flows more freely.

Yours does not have flappers. Volvo did away with hem many years before your year.

Bruce is right on the money. Flappers were eliminated in 1999. I have a 1999 model year Cobalt (July 1998 build date) with a PWTR Volvo Penta 5.0Gi engine and I have no flappers

That's good news as one of my buddy's had a older merc that the flappers came unhinged on. I am new to Volvo and still learning the ins and outs, buy happy so far.

Received the replacement exhaust bellows from Cecil marine today (very quick service). Definitely the right part with hose clamp and snap ring. There is no slit in the part. There is a series of small holes; I assume they get oriented toward the bottom for drainage.

Yes, they face downward. Some had slits some had holes.
