Re: New Bennington 2274

Thanks Rooster. Yes indeed these threads are totally worthless w/o pics. :p
I'm certainly glad these aren't our Dad's or Grandad's toons. For what we paid for the Bennington I could have had a Deckboat of good quality, but there is no doubt these rigs are the ultimate entertaining hangin out platform in the final analysis. Easy maintenance too.
I'm rather burned out on maintaining fiberglass. This is our 10th boat, so we set this up to be as maintenance free as possible. We are in fresh water now and from a maintanance standpoint after living in FL 22 years with boats I won't miss the salt and brutal sun.

We ordered it with 3 25 inch logs and a "express" underbody package with some strakes. Gray panels with black double biminis. Bunch of upgrades and options.

Beautiful Johnny. The double biminis are a must for our crew during the brutal Summers, and its nice to be able to navigate through rainstorms without getting pelted in the face. I know that power assisted hydraulic steering is an expensive option, but worth it. Good luck !!!
P.S. - Did "5150" get you the 20% discount he gets on Benningtons ;) ???

Its cost + 10% and sales tax and no, I am saving that for myself someday.

Glad you like your boat Johnny, looks like my boys did a pretty good job on it and I love the grey panels, that is one of the best colors we have in my opinion.

Re: New Bennington 2274

We have about 10 hours on the Bennington so far. We are through the break-in period with some excursions up to 4000RPM.
With the 150 Yamaha 15X15.25 prop, 27 gallons of fuel, 813 ft elevation, 75 degrees F, 2-3 mph wind and two persons aboard speed clocked with Garmin GPS:
1K RPM = 4 mph
2K 8
3k 16
4K 23
The dealer thought it would do 40, I'm not sure with these numbers. We will see. The acceleration is impressive so it may need a different prop to see 40. I don't expect to do much cruising above 25 so if it will do 30 for tubing and 35 if necessary that's ok.
The power assist steering is impressive!!
The ride is very nice. We have had six persons on board with gear and 6 inch chop. Cut right through it and sits up high enough to remain dry.

Re: New Bennington 2274

Thus far we had had a couple of Bennington issues.
We had the boat in the water for a week and the starboard toon had a leak on the endcap. Very rear and at about the 4:00 position. Our Dockmaster alerted me that we were listing. I called the dealer and they had someone out within a couple hours. We drove the boat slowly about 6 miles to the ramp for the haul out. The dealer had to put a relief hole in the tube at 6:00 position to get all the water out and the seam was welded and has held for 10 days. To the Dealers credit, they had the boat repaired and back within 24 hours. We were in a bit of a quandry as we had out of town guests in who were from the north country and were looking forward to a 75 degree ride Saturday before Easter.

I contacted Bennington directly via email, but never heard back. I'm sure they prefer to just handle all this through the dealer, which is fine. The Dealer said this wasn't common, just my luck.

The only other minor issue, both bimini top boots had incomplete sewing jobs where the material meets the zipper welt.
Dealer is ordering two new ones.

We orderd seat covers from Bennington as we keep the boat in a slip; have vinyl floor and the playpen cover is a bit of a pain even though we have become proficient taking it off and putting it on; particularly if we just want to go sit on the boat at the dock, or do some quick cleanup.

Being in manufacturing myself I like to maintain my equilibrium and see how things like this will be handled. I would rate the handling of the leaking pontoon a 94 and the seam 100% if we get new ones within 30 days. My philosophy on things like this, so far, no one died and you can fix it with money.

Nice boat, it just goes to show ya, no matter the brand you can still have problems. Hopefully they will be the last ones.

Re: New Bennington 2274

I believe I would ask Bennington for a replacement tube. I recall "5150" stating in an earlier thread that they dont repair
damaged tubes at the factory, they just junk them and start with a new one.

Re: New Bennington 2274

He sent me a PM and I had the entire repair crew in my office that morning to show them this and chew on their @%ses and it was brought up at my Monday meeting with the entire shop.

As I told him, not as an excuse because this is not excusable but we are running 80 tubes a day and as hard as we try we are not perfect and things unfortunatelty get through, this will be dealt with to his satisfaction as all our warranty claims are.

I will forward this to the head of our customer service and make sure he is aware of it although I did see the email he sent to us on the Bennington website the day after I got the PM so it is in the system.

Rooster, if I was building 6 boats a day like Southbay I could personally inspect each one but at 32 a day that is prettty tough.

Sounds like Bennington is an upstanding company. Everyone makes mistakes, it's how you deal with them that counts.

Re: New Bennington 2274

The company I work for welds mild steel and stainless steel tanks. 10s of thousands of linear feet of welds monthly. We have to keep pressurized gas in a tank (not keep water out). I know the challenges. And yes, as stated eveyone makes an occassional mistake. It's how things are handled that counts. I think my reporting and sharing of this event was factual and objective. I am satisfied with the Dealer's response, a 24 hour turnaround with a repaired pontoon. Do I wish that it didn't happen? Yes, was it addressed expeditiously and and professionally, yes. Apparently the toons are two or three chambers?
If it were a single tube I think the outcome would have been different?

That's what we would have done also, except we have to ship our product back to the Factory in IL and eat the in/out charges.

5250 I'm glad to get the back story, which prior to Forums like this, wouldn't have happened.

No one from Bennington with the exception of the Dealer (which is what I would expect) has reached out to me.

The take away from all this should be is that "stuff happens" and Bennington and the Dealer stood behind its product 100% and handled the situation professionally.

Re: New Bennington 2274

Further comments and questions to the readers of the Thread. I just want to repeat again, this is a slip kept boat and it took a week for this to transpire. The "hole" I was told was the size of "a pen tip". I would concur with that approximately as I was there when the boat came out.

Those trailering with frequent daily in outs might never see this?

I understand the root cause, bad weld. How about the QA/QC?

Are the tubes pressure tested prior to leaving the factory?
Are there multiple and independent chambers in the 25 inch toon? How many?

Re: New Bennington 2274

As I said in my PM respones, I am baffled as to how this got through.

Every tube is air checked at least twice, it is repair welded-air checked and the leaks repaired then the repairs are checked again so how this could have gotten past that is beyond me but as I said it has been dealt with, I take these situations very seriously, I have 6 full time guys who's job it is just to repair and check tubes.

Our tubes are 3-4 seperate chambers, as you saw, and it is a write up offense to not seal the fronts before they are welded, your story and pictures made for a very strong reminder of what we need to do and why we do it, a teachable moment if you will.

I am glad that everything worked as it should and you were back on the water in a day, I did get with the head of customer service and he called your dealer to make sure this was handle and again I am very sorry this happened.
