New here, and new boat owner. We just bought a Suntracker Bassbuggy, with a Merc. 60hp bigfoot, 4 stroke EFI. Just wondering if a hydrofoil-type stabilizer would be helpfull, or just a waste of money.

Thanks!

Is that a pontoon boat? Hydrofoils would be useless on a pontoon boat in my opinion. I've never seen one with a hydrofoil.

Yes, it is a pontoon, (18') I thought it might help on cavitation.

hello
is it cavitating or ventilating? two distincly different problems. sounds more like a motor mounting and/or prop problem. most toons are incredibly underpowered from the factory. what is your toons max HP rating?
if the boat is new and you just took delivery then take it back.
you may also need to learn how the power trim functions and insure your using it properly.
good luck and keep posting

Re: New boat, new owner

While all of that may be true, I have a fin on my toon with a 70 HP rude and it helps alot for "Hole Shot". Takes off "right Now" with the fin and handles much better, too. Top speed is not affected at all, surprisingly. I have tried it with and without the fin and it turns better in hard turns with the fin with no blowout. Can't say what it would do for your toon, but it helped mine. And yes, my engine is set up right...

Harris Pontoon Boats have included a large, about an 1/8", plate they make and bolt on the cavatation plate to cut down on ventilation on quick take offs and cavatation at faster speeds
on their I/Os, the last 20+ years.
Backfire ;)

hello
wow I am still brathless. what a riot
Hole shot with a 70 on a toon :) :) 0 to 15 in 45 seconds with a tail wind :) :) .
no offence just ribbing at ya :)
like the guy who asked me about a speed prop for his jon boat and a 9.8 merc.
toons do have a nasty habit of ventilating. caused by to much throttle and its easier to suck air from the surface rather than water from in front of the prop. sometimes fins help sometimes they just mask a problem.
that is why I say if its new take it back. wait to long and its yours.
good luck and keep posting

Suntracker claims your 60 HP Bigfoot will push that toon 22 mph. Plenty fast for a hydrofoil to be effective in helping to eliminate ventilation/cavitation during hole-shots and sharp turning...which is always a problem on toons because of the hull design.
