Re: New boat! now i gotta pull it tho....

I have an 05 Pathfinder.

What year Pathfinder? A late model is on my list along with 4Runner and Envoy (no matter how hard I try I can't ignore the deals). I've read though that Pathfinder mpg is under 20 highway - sounds like you do better?

Re: New boat! now i gotta pull it tho....

Like I said, a 2005. I only have 2wd. took it on vacation last Christmas and drove in a good bit of snow in the smoky mtns, never had a problem. It is the best all around vehicle I've ever owned. We do, like I said, 23.4 on average on the highway. I usually do not drive too much over 70 because mileage goes way down. I have been on dozens of boat ramps, one in particular was right after another guy had to be pulled out due to heavy algae. I had no problems pulling my 18.5 foot runabout out. It has a 4.3l v6 sterndrive. I think tire selection has more to do with traction than most give credit. We honestly get about 19 mpg in town and 23+ on the highway. I usually go about 10mph over the speed limit, except on the interstate highways where, like I said, I try to stay around 70. It is a very powerful and fast 4.0 v6 that Nissan has designed. Timing chain not belt, 24 valves. It is a brilliant engine! Truck has 4 wheel disc brakes, very large and powerful. It has a 6000 pound tow capacity. It moves and stops very well with my 3200-3300 lbs of boat and stuff. We have many times had me and the wife and our two kids (11 &14) and three of their friends plus stuff, skis, tubes, boards, life jackets, lunch, ice and drinks, etc., etc.... Great vehicle!

She's home! It was an uneventful trip and transaction, 6 cyl 2002 Trailblazer towed it nicely. From New Haven CT to SE PA, 3 "fully grown" men in the vehicle, no gas or goodies in the boat, mostly interstate, some backroads, some long steep grades around Allentown. Based on this, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Envoy if I was considering towing performance only - reliability is another factor to consider though. Trailblazer got 12-13 mpg.

Trailer is a new Venture vab-3025 aluminum bunk with brakes - I do have a question about this trailer that I will post in a separate thread.

Here's my 2 cents....before my Porsche Cayenne, 2 yrs ago, I had a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 4x4 with 47,000 original miles on it when I traded it in. I bought it new in the fall of 1996. It was used strictly as a towing/recreational vehicle. I used it to tow my 24' snowmobile trailer - loaded with 4 sleds, just like this: http://www.snowmobiletrailer.us/snowmobile101vnt.htm
to our lake house in Maine, and we used to drive to Quebec and back twice a year towing the monster, through deep snow and ice.

It also used to tow our old boat, a 26' Cobalt. No problem. I never had one problem with it, aside from a frozen rear caliper in 2003. It had decent gas mileage while towing the sleds and the boat, averaging about 12-13 mpg.

When I traded it in for the Porsche, I got $8,000. The Jeep dealer was going to give me $9,000 towards a new Commander. I was heavily leaning towards a V8 Commander - it has a 7200# towing capacity and Jeep reliability. But I decided to treat myself for all of my hard work.

You can pick one up from that vintage for around $3000-5000 in mint shape with decent mileage and in great mechanical/physical condition, considering most people that bought them never even used the 4wd system.

I would buy one again.

Best of luck,
-Mark

Re: New boat! now i gotta pull it tho....

Boat/motor/trailer/etc. weighed in at 3412 (very little gas) so I'm thinking that should put me between 3800 and 4000 absolute max.

Right now I'm down to two vehicles;

2006-above V8 Explorer.

2005-above Pathfinder.

I like the Explorer better overall and deals seem much better but quality is an issue. It's funny though, for every one "No Explorer" review there's a few that love them. Pathfinders are not a whole lot better quality-wise anyway.

Still confused but I'm getting closer....

I can not really speak for the other vehicles, but my wife has a Honda pilot and it does have a 5000lb towing capacity. That is one of the things that we checked before buying it. So far I have not towed with it, but I am confident that it would not have any problem pulling your boat. I would go ahead and spring for the trailer brakes swap. Her Pilot averages 22 mpg in mixed driving and is very comfortable. It is her daily driver and we use it almost exclusively on trips. It is also the 4wd model which could help on ramps. It is also very well laid out and fairly roomy. I also own an older toyota 4runner. It is a great vehicle and an excellant 4x4, but given the option I would tow with the pilot as it has a better ride and seems to have more power. I drive a Ford F250 so it is my tow vehicle as it will tow what ever with ease. To have a vehicle that was both a comuter and a tow vehicle I would consider the Honda, but drive them all and see what you like.

Stay away from the Exploder. There is a reason U-Hual wont allow you to tow any of there trailers with an Exploder. They are not stable.

My personal preference is a S10 Blazer. I curently own two of them, sold the third one last winter to a friend of my sons. They have a 4.3L V6, 4x4, and rated to tow 5,400 pounds. 3,500 pounds on the bumper ball. The 4.3 can be found in the S-Series trucks, Astro vans, Full size 1/2 ton pick-ups, and marine engines. Finding parts any where in the US won't be a problem. CAn't say that for those Nissans, or Toyota's. Your going to have a couple day wait until parts come in even in your local autoparts store. Hell I have a Mitsubishi plant 40 miles from me and it still takes several days to get parts. Plus the 4.3 is the famous Chevy 350 V8 with 2 pistons removed. It is a highly capable engine. 190hp/250foot pounds of torque. Not too mention 18-22mpg city/highway. Towing I average about 19-20mpg.

The 4L60E tranny is the same tranny used in ALL GM 1/2 ton and lighter rear wheel drive vehicles. That list includes, fullsize pick-ups, fullsize SUVS (Tahoes, Suburbans, Escalades), S-Series, Astro Van, Full size vans, and corevettes, plus a hosst of other rear whel drive cars, including the GMC cousins of each listed. There are some minor interior differences, however if you need a salvage unit that too can be found in any junk yard. It has been in production since the early 80's and is one of the best, if not the best automatic transmission produced by any manufacture. It has 4 forward gears, 3.06 first (lowerst first gear of any autos, great to get that load moving without spinning tires, even on wetr pavement), and a 75% overdrive, plus the torque converter locks up saving more fuel. Teh tranny can be built to handle 450 foot pounds of torque, enough to survive a healthy V8 on steriods. In fact you can drop a V8 into the S10-Blazer with few modifications. They even sell a book on the conversion, its taht simple.

If you go for the 2nd generation 4x4, it will either have the NP231 (floor shifted) or NP233 (electronic shifted). Both are GM version of the same t-case found in Jeeps. IT is a strong durable unit in a light weight truck. The 4.3L/4L60E combo is so dependable, strong that it is a common swap into other trucks, Jeeps, Rangers, Toyotas, off-road hard core rigs.

Plus the S10-Blazer has a solid fully boxed frame from teh front back to the rear axle. They are one tough truck, built to handle towing, and all your gear. So tough the first year of introduction Petersons 4x4 rated them teh best off-raod truck. It was the only year in the competition.

Don't be fooled by thinking the Exploder is equal to the S10-Blazer. The Exploder is top heavy, it is taller and has a wider body, however it doesnt have a wider stance to compensate and thus gets unstable at high speeds, especially while towing. Hence why U-Haul wont rent trailers to Exploders. I can rent a car hauler to tow behind my S10-Blazer and they wont een rent a little 4x6 open trailer to teh Exploder.

I could go on. You could say I am partial to teh Blazers. :D
I know my way around htem pretty well. So much in fact I help people on other forums fix them.

In short, stay away from the Exploders.
If you want a midsized rig, look at the TrailBlazer, Blazer, Colorado, H3 or the GMC versions. Then again the Flex fuel Tahoe isn't a bad option either.

You are partial to Blazers - there, I said it! Thanks for taking the time to give the great info!

I am looking at two vehicles today, an 06 Envoy (non-Denali) and an 05 Pathfinder both loaded out, with the Pathy being $2k more at the start. There have been a few changes in the plan so whatever I buy now must have all the bells and whistles, sunroof, leather, heated seats, etc. because it will be replacing my wife's 03 Nissan Maxima which has all those things and she's become rather accustomed to having them, if you get my drift. Right now, I'd rather have the Pathy (our Maxima has 120k miles and has needed nothing) and I'm hoping to close the $ gap but at the end of the day, after bargaining, I'm guessing the Envoy will be the (much) better buy.

An interesting (I thought) story; Stopped at a CarMax-type lot in our area yesterday with three printed listings of cars off their website, a Pathfinder and two Explorers, all the same price range... salesman looks at the three papers, throws the Explorer listings aside and says, "you don't want these, lets focus on the Nissan". Turns out the Nissan was already sold and I walked out with no further mention of the Explorers (and they had 11 of them on the lot).

Oh, and did you know you can buy a late-model, fairly-well optioned Dodge Durango with 20-30k miles for $11-12k price before dealing? Amazing.

i've been towing with Surburbans for 20 years, been very satisfied, the Envoy is almost the same thing. but who knows what is going to happen to GM, in the near future.

Re: New boat! now i gotta pull it tho....

IMO, (like Hanr3 mentioned) a Trailblazer/Envoy is your best bet, but I am a GM guy. I drive a clean older S-10 Ext. Cab Pickup 4.3V6 Auto 2WD, and it would probably do the trick for you, but it would be working harder. My stepson picked up a 95' Exploder with a 4.0 (Mazda designed) V6 & stick shift, being open minded I tried it out, first it didn't have the power of my S-10, then with it's "twin I beam" suspension design, it seemed dangerously unstable at any speed, especially in turns! (I understand why they tend to roll over easy now) plus, that engine had chronic head gasket issues  It was not the vehicle for me!

My other stepson, has a late model Jeep Grand Cherokee 2WD, not sure the year? but the last year of the straight 6cyl. engine. and I was amazed at the towing capacity of it, plus it rode comfortable, but firm, almost like a sport car, it has a lot of nice features, I would seriously consider it if I was looking for an SUV with one of the Best towing capacities available (with the V8 anyway).

My first son had a late model Durango with the 360 hi output motor that was great for towing, but he couldn't afford to run it at 8-9mpg while towing!

In closing, I'd go with a GM, or Jeep vehicle myself, I wouldn't trust any of the mid size foreign SUV's, especially the primarily front drives (due to parts, & service issues).

If it were me i would buy a 4 door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. its a fun to own jeep and will tow what you will have. It actually has a frame and solid axles no unibody crap. Very capabile in all enviroments, convertible with removable doors. I have a Jeep Grand cherokee 4x4 it tows my 3500lb setup and I love it.

Re: New boat! now i gotta pull it tho....

i've owned 3 Jeep Cherokee's (still have 2). they have all towed my boat and camper just fine but they are not a civilized vehicle. if your wife likes the ride and luxury of a Maxima a Cherokee is not for her. they are what they are, a stiff sprung built to be an off road SUV. a noisey bone shaking ride on pavement with down and dirty can't get stuck off road performance. they are what the term SUV was supposed to mean just like "pick up truck" didn't mean funny shaped car like it means now. i am a Jeep fan but they are a love'em or hate'em vehicle.

Re: New boat! now i gotta pull it tho....

Had several Wranglers over the years and traded the last one for a new Mustang GT convertible, which we still have as our good-weather toy. I've heard the newer Wranglers are more "civilized" but they are still faw away from comfortable.

I bought an 05 Pathfinder LE this weekend; has all the bells and whistles just like our Maxima so other than having lower mpg, it fits most of what we (she) want and (I) need.

I'll post a pic of the rig in the current running thread as soon as I get one.

Thanks to everyone for all of their help! I may not have taken anyone's specific advice but all the comments and questions did help me narrow things down.

I meant the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but either way sounds like you found a good vehicle, and a solution to your problem. Good for You! ;) Let us know how it works out, and gas mileage wise, I might even consider one of these in the future from hearing the good things about it.

Re: New boat! now i gotta pull it tho....

As far as reliability take a long hard look in the consumer reports annual edition. At the library. There are trucks/SUVs that are head and shoulders above their compition.I had a number of Tacomas 2.7 4 150hp back then 2000auto got over 21+ at 74 mph.No attempt on my part to economize.About 14 in very short barely warmed city winter driving.I believe the V6 would do as well driven carefully. Was a little gutless pulling 3000+ pounds but the 6 has much more power.3 yr lease never had to take in for work.A friend has a 2002 full cab 6 auto does 18-20 combined highway and very short barely warmed driving, service calls on a college campus.Almost 7 years old
Only normal maintenance.Brakes about 35,000,tires,etc.Still running original serpentine belt and hoses. The Dakota he replaced went in for brakes at 10 or 12,000 miles, other stuff; belt idler, broken seat twice(he weighs 340)
various seals and gaskets,starter etc.
