Re: new boat or used boat

I have bought and sold airplanes over the years and one of the big things is time on the engines. Is this the same in boating should I worry if a boat has say 750 hours on it?

YES - USED boats at a DEALER are VERY hard to come by. You know why? Because trade in on a boat is crap...you will lose 25-40% of your value trading in compared to private sale. CHECK craigslist.

Used boats from PRIVATE sellers are NOT hard to come buy...but at a dealer...YES...pickings are slim.

In fact....here are some used boats I'd recommend checking out in person:
BTW---I would SERIOUSLY re-consider the decision to purchase a "jet boat". Prop boats will re-sell MUCH better and be more sought after. Plus...they are more fuel efficient than jet-boats. Who-ever said jets were more efficient is full of it.

Look at these:

If you HAVE to have a jet-boat: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/boa/674653825.html

There are MORE....this is just at 1st glance what is available.

Get into a good boating course. Check out the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary website or the U.S. Power Squadron. You will be a much safer and happier boater for it. You will also probably be able to score some rides and wheel time to help you on your descision. Knowledge IS power, and right now you are ripe for being taken advantage of.

By taking the course you will learn to seperate out a lot of B.S. from anyone that wants to take your money for a boat.

By the way....Welcome to the iBoat Forum!

I recommend buying new. That keeps a good supply of gently used boats for me to buy.

I wouldn't worry about the hours. The first thing you need to do is a compression check on the motor. The second (in my 2 cents worth), take the boat out for a test run when out make sure all accessories work like they should make sure the boat gets on plane etc etc. Allot of people, me being one of them are still running motors from the 1950's, and most of these motors have never been rebuilt and are still original.

You also need to check used boat out for hull cracks/holes and weak spots in the deck and transom.

He is very mistaken (being nice here) on his jet information.

:DYou are politicly correct sir.:D

Hey there aren't any independent dealers around you. You know places with a lot of used boats?

Stay away from dealers selling just one brand of new boat. They have inventory there stuck with and will say just about anything to move them. They are worst than car salesman.

And like I said if someone lies to you about something like a jet or their brand holding value you know they are a liar and stay away.
