Hey guys! new to the boat world,
i've got a quick question. I bought an 86 capri
with a volvo penta 8 cylinder, i guess its a 305 chevy motor
when i get in the water with just me in the boat it runs great and its quick and fun but when theres more people in the boat it simply won't rev up to where i want it or even get up to speed.

There is a little flap in the carb that when i open up more it runs a little better
do you think i need to have the carb rebuilt?

Does anyone know what size and pitch prop belongs on this boat? Thanks
for the help!

Re: New boat owner! 86 capri 1900 question!

Welcome to iboats!

If that flap is at the top of the carb, it's the choke plate. It should be completely open when the engine has warmed up. Failure to open completely will cause poor performance, so that's where to start. Once that's nailed down, your should at least change the spark plugs- they get carbon-fouled from the engine running rich.

I don't have the prop specs for your year boat, but the comparable '88 came with a 14 1/2 x 19 (diameter x pitch) aluminum prop with a recommended WOT of 4600 RPM. Your boat should be similar.

Hey thanks for the quick reply. i thought it should be completely open....hmmm....i had taken the plugs out and cleaned them really well so i think they should be alright. since you have the 85hp force outboard and i have a 305 chevy/volvo penta 225 sterndrive would the prop be the same?

No, my motor revs higher but has a lot less torque and horsepower. But the boat is smaller. I have a 17" pitch prop.
