New Boat Owner Here! Just a few questions

Hi iBoats!

Bought my first boat to see if this is what I really want to do. It's a 1986 Bayliner 19' Capri open bow/65hp Evenrude OB. The seller provided all the repair bills and the winterizing bills (Michigan). The upholstery needs to be redone as someone else tried to do it (looks real bad). Here's my question(s):

A) Does anyone know where I can get an exploded diagram of what is supposed to be on the boat, as far as parts/esthetics?? I have a few mounting holes on the top of the boat, but nothing is there.

B) Canvas cover - where can I go to get one for the cockpit and the bow?

C) How do I plug holes in the hull? The previous owner had two fish finders installed on the boat and he removed it, leaving the mounting holes below the water line.

Any help would be appreciated. Pictures will follow once the weather warms up in Michigan!

To answer some of your questions (i own a bayliner '89 19' cuddy OB and a '89 15' OB):

Evinrude is not the original engine. I have a '92 120hp evinrude on my '19. I would be very hesitant to have anything less than a 90hp on it. 65hp seems very, very, weak for a 19'.

Last I knew Kim from Canvas Plus has the original upholstery patterns. She did a great job for my '19 vinyl.

A) From my own experience parts lists/breakouts for older Bayliners (1992 or earlier) are only on microfilm at the factory due to some fire or other event years ago.

B) http://www.letastopshop.com is the official supplier for Bayliners for canvas covers for the boat.

C) simple screw holes : 3M 5200 available here at Iboats. Through the hull holes- more complicated- post this specific question under boat restoration for answers.

I agree with mixerjv on the power-- I have a 65HP Evinrude on my little 16' boat, and it's ok-- Boat gets up to 30mph. Wouldn't mind a little more power (my boat's rated up to 100HP). So you're not going to be moving too fast. I think I read somewhere that you never want a motor below 80% of your boat's max HP rating(?)

Might want to see what HP your boat is rated for, get a motor closer to that (but not over!), and sell the 65HP.

The 65hp seems to be a bit to small, I have a 2000 capri 1802 cuddy, with a 90hp merc, pushes the boat around great. In todays economy,depending on what you wish to spend, you should be able to find a good 90hp for around $2000. As far as the holes in your transom, drill them out,get a wooden dowel cover it with marine epoxy, insert it into the holes, and trim. Get a piece of STARBOARD, cut to size and install on transom, then you have a nice place to mount your sensors for a depth finder,ETC.
