New Boat owner here with ?'s

Hi everyone I'm a new boat owner i just bought a 1978 Stuery 17foot and it came with a 1968 johnson 65 hp VXL-14B .My issue is it revs great idles ok but then it just dies.Also it has no power when i put the gas to it it just boggs down like theres too much fuel or some thing ..the plugs in it are champion QL77JC4 ....
Can anyone help me with this issue??? Please its my first boat and me and the wife love to fish....Thank you

have you checked spark and compression. when were the carbs last cleaned? have the fuel lines been replaced with B1 rated alcohol resistant fuel lines? when was the last link n sinc done?

does it start right back up or do you have to wait to get it running again? It could be running lean if its starving itself under a load or too rich if its flooding itself out. try the mixture adjusment first then do a carb rebuild if that doesnt work.

havent checked compression yet I just put it in today after waiting 2 month..New fuel lines..Spark looks yellowish white/light blue..Yes as soon as it dies out it fires right back up..This is good that it starts back up ..

The boat hasent seen water since 2003 ..going to get the carbs redone..
any clue on what kind of plugs i should use?And how do i adjust the mix??I see 2 knobs on each carb is that it? thanks a million guys..

hey hey cleaned the carbs resynced them as well new plugs ..comp test was great ..Boat runs very well now..had it in a test tank in drive no boog even when it was cranked up..thanks guys for your help ..
