I just bought a 2004 starcraft stardeck 2000 boat with the 5L carb'ed volvo penta I/O. My old boat was an '89 Invader with the mercruiser 3L I/O.

It's in perfect condition and I believe it to be very well maintained. Less than 50 hours on it.

I'm going to be taking it out tomorrow for the first time. Any suggestions on things to do maintenance-related or things to watch out for?

Any important differences I need to know about between the Volvo and Mercruiser?

To start it, I assume I pump it twice and then bring the throttle back half-way, right?

thanks.

Check all the fluids, run it on land and make sure it pumps water. If it was mine, I would change the gear lube, pull the drive and check the bellows, ujoints, gimbal bearing, and alignment before putting it in the water.
Being 3 years old, if the impeller hasn't been changed, I would replace it also. 3 years is pushing it if it's the original.

Don,

Thanks! Is my description on the best way to start it accurate?

Should work, but experiment and see what works best.
