Well, it's not brand new...lol, but I have been working in PA since March, and have taken up fly fishing! So anyway, the streams are low and the weather is warm so the trout seem a bit lazy these days, and I have been jonesing to get on one of these lakes in northern Pa, and hit some bass, or pike, or muskee, or even crappies! So I'm searching craig's list, and I find some cheap canoes, you know in the 250 buck range which I find easy enough.. Drive 2-1/2 hrs south near Pittsburg to check one out and it turns out to be about a 50 buck or less, in my book, watercraft.. So I'm eating a mediocre lunch at this place that my 50 buck boat guy says is an awesome place to eat, (ya, I guess I'm a little slow) cruising the list on my smartphone, when a 125 buck 12' flat bottom appears about an hour and a half from my current location and not really on my way home, but like I said earlier, I need my lake fishing fix so off I go... So I get there to check it out and it's sitting on top of this little Larson 12' aluminum V-nose beauty, on a little trailer no less, so I had to ask... is this one for sale? Well it was! 400 bucks with the trailer... SOLD!! but... turns out that in this stupid state, a trailer title has to be notorized, and transfered the same day of purchase, WTF?? So the next obvious question out my mouth is... will you sell the boat separately? Well, he looks at me and says... SURE! and for 125 bucks, I now have this little beauty in my small fleet! Have a look fellas, but don't get too jealous! LOL, she's aaall mine...

Oh ya, I forgot to mention, he signs the title to boat, and I sign the title to the boat, and then he slaps the registration stickers on the boat,(good through March next year) and says happy boating!! What's wrong with this state??

Nice little boat - what are you going to power it with? Just me, but a 1960's merc 39 or merc 60 would look great on it!

Re: New boat!!

I was saying you guys would be jealous! I'm seriously thinking about stripping the paint off the hull and rub rails, and polishing the aluminum and staining the oak rubrails to a natural color. What do guys think?

Re: New boat!!

Nice boat...reminds me of my 1st boat - 12ft. Lowe aluminum flat bottom. Boy, the places I went and the things I did in that thing when I was younger would scare the heck out of me today:facepalm:

Good Luck.

I think the natural wood would be really pretty - do it! However, I don't think I'd go the polished aluminum route (though you probably have to strip it down to clean it up anyway). Aside from the marginal masking job on the scheme, I like the color. It's got some style to it. I'd probably re-do it better!

I think you're right, I like the color scheme too, so then maybe I strip it, and just polish that top end and do a better paint job than the last guy, I have a couple friends with bodyshops that could accomplish that for me. Then maybe polish the bench supports and what nots inside the hull and restore all the natural wood. That would be pretty sharp.

First thought I had was good cleaning, a quick sand, and some clear coat that'd be a sweet looking little boat. Guess you have more ambition than I do, but that extra would make it really stand out.

Nice score on the tinny.

Y'know - maybe if you can just clean up the top of it, do the wood and match pretty close to the paint color - you might be able to mask just above the topline (so to clean up the edge) and paint over it? Maybe a little quicker and easier. It really looks in pretty decent shape. It'd look really cool/retro with a late 50's Jonson 7 1/2 on the back!!

Well the paint isn't very good at all, and starting to chip and peel a bit, so I figured I'd have to take it all off anyway. And I have a couple vintage Johnson Sea Horse outboards, a 2-1/2 and a 3 right now, and I'm heading out on Sunday to snag a couple old Mercurys for next to nothing, so I have a few options now. I'm definately into the retro look with this boat and will probably never have anything newer than a '59 model year outboard, lol. The hull is in amazing shape though, no dents, dings, scrathes, gouges or anything. Just bad paint...

So you think it's a tin boat? I guess it could be, I just assumed it was aluminum but that could change the way I handle the stripping and painting... hmmm, now you have me wondering and I have a magnet handy... be right back!

Well it doesn't stick to the boat, tin is magnetic right?

That is a very nice boat! And sounds like you put it together cheap enough, right now with the boat and the two motors I'm up to 275, and I could sell one of those.... someday. :) Just need a trailer now!
