Well, I bit the bullet, bought a 1995 Sea Ray 180, with the Mercruiser 4.3LX. It was Horribly Faded, so I bought the Meguiars kit, and shined it all up. Bought the needed tools to do the Motor oil, and leg oil, and did the fluids..

I'd Never owned a boat before, but had been on many, and hauled bigger loads...

Get the boat about a half hour from the chosen lake, and, going down a hill, the trailer kept swinging right...accelerate, it'd go left...It got so bad the boat was swinging the truck around. eventually found the ditch, where the boat broke the transom straps, and bent the winch... off-loaded and skidded down the ditch.

Turns out, only the right Surge Brake was connected on the trailer, with the left pinched off, causing the swing to the right on deceleration.

:( Now the poor boat has a broken lower leg, broken Gimbal ring, broken steering arm, and badly damaged gel-coat.

What a great first post.

Good news is, the gel coat is fixed, the previous owner bought me the parts, and all I have to do now is change them. Have the Gimbal off, bell housing off, old lower leg dis-assembled and new parts await install...

Now, Here I am, in my quest for Knowledge about the repair, and, boating in General. I'm in Northern Alberta, Canada....

Oddly, I think the boat may have sunk if I'd hit the water...The bilge plug was out, (I didn't know it existed at the time) and the Bilge pump had disconnected at the discharge line...how fast would this thing have sunk with no pump and a 1/2" hole in the transom?!

Wow, consider yourself lucky the previous owner paid for the parts. Most boats (and trailers) are sold as is, where is. That's a pretty conscientious seller. Also glad to hear no one was hurt. That's a pretty odd thing to have a surge line pinched. I'd pull both wheels and make sure it's all working before heading out again.

helluva first post PS94! Sorry to hear! I was a bit lucky to get mine home 6 weeks ago. I start to do the PM to find both bearings shot, pinched brake line on the trailer. Also, the exhaust manifold was pouring water in the bildge! Just a loose clamp!

Anyway, you found the right place. Most of these members are very patient and even more knowledgeable.

good luck and welcome to iboats

Dang man, With that trailer swinging like that be glad that the wreck wasn't worse than it was. Still it stinks that the boat got damaged like that. good luck on working on her... The work is pretty enjoyable. We'll be here pulling for you!

Yep, I was lucky it wasn't worse than it was. The previous owner was a boat/bike/sled dealer, and I felt they were responsible for ALL the costs, as they let the unit leave the lot with unsafe brakes, they felt is was an "As Is" purchase..so we comprimised, and that was the end result...

While you got that thing apart you should inspect all the other rubber parts in there and replace if they look suspect. A little preventative work won't hurt. Just because it's sold as is they still have to protect their reputation. GP's not that big of a place and everybody has toy's up there. It won't take long for the story to get out.

Yeah, I did all the bellows while I was in there, trim sender, trim limit, at my expense while i was replacing the damaged parts. New bearings in the leg, and a re-seal kit, just to be sure.

Had it in the water finally last night, and I love it. :D

Welcome to the forum. Here you will get answers, opinions and sympathy. So glad everything worked out OK. You were lucky. I'd be concerned as to why it fishtailed in the first place. Have you checked your tongue weight.

Re: New Boater.

The tongue weight was almost nothing once the boat was fuelled up...Which disturbs me...It's the original trailer the boat came with...

The trailer the dealer lent me to get it out of the ditch, has so much tongue weight that one cannot even lift it....which suits me fine...the Original trailer, you can drive it around with the nose in the air...

The axle on the original trailer is fixed...Can i safely move the unit forwards? or maybe I'll just keep this EZ-Loader as payment for the hassle buying this boat has been, lol

Re: New Boater.

If anyone can help... I am new to buying boats . I have Ben looking at the sea doo jet boats and am wondering what I should be looking 4 . I have two kids and want some thing that I can pull them with. I like that the seadoo can spin and has alot of the same ability a jet ski has! How much hp do I need to pull a 200 lb person on skies? And what could I get for $ 5,000 ? Thx
