New boater

Hello everybody,
So i am excited to say that i am now involved in the boating world and jumping in headfirst. Last summer my Grandfather gave me his old boat. A 1962 14' mirrocraft Family Runabout. It has a 1970 evinrude 18 hp.


I took it out last year once to make sure everything worked. And it all did. But after sitting in the sun since 2003, it needed a little TLC. Im 6'2'', and i just didnt fit very well. I felt as though i was sitting on the bottom of the boat, and when it got up to speed. i couldnt hardly see over the bow. So this last weekend i built new seats and put a new fishfinder on it and this week will be replacing the impeller just for good measure. And this winter will be painting the boat. So im pretty excited. Hopefully i can get it licensed this week and have it on the water this weekend.

I will probably be on here alot for info/advice.

Welcome aboard. You're in the right place. Can't beat the old 14' tinny + 18-25 hp OMC motor, a classic zippy combo, if ever there was one, and I'm not just saying that cause I run the same thing Holler if you get stuck.

Please fill in your "Location" in your profile. It will help in getting relevant answers.

When you get it "licensed", be aware that depending on your State and your age, You may also need to be "Licensed" (A.K.A. Boaters Education Certificate) to operate the boat.

Even if you are not legally required, it is always a very good idea to take a class!
You may already know all the answers, the problem is that you do not know what all the questions are!

So, I dont know how to change the size of my pictures. But they are running about 2 mb in size and it keeps saying that it is too large to upload.

Try searching at Microsoft.com > Powertools > Image Resizer.

A basic resizer and its free.

I just found a 35 HP outboard for $75. She said it ran two years ago when it was on their boat, but has been in storage since. Its an older model sea king.

Any idea what year and whether or not to go for it?

I would hold out for a good 'ol vintage Johnson and/or Evinrude made between the mid 50s-early 70s. They're all over the place, reasonably priced, easy to work on and parts are still readily available from places like iboats and others, oh and they're super cool lookin' and total chick magnets. Be patient. A good deal will present itself. In the mean time, give these articles a read. They'll make you true believer in old Johnny-rudes in no time.

Glad to see you got the resizer working.
Don't over do it!
75x100px is a little small to see anything.
Rotate is an option Too! Make Up at the Top.
Resize so the largest dimension is in the 600 to 900px range.

So,
forgive me for my ignorance.
But if my motor has a pull starter AND an electric starter on it, can i use both?

It can have both. All small hp motors are pull start by nature, but many also came with the option of electric start. Electric starters aren't necessary to operate the motor and you usually don't really "need" one on most motors below say 20 hp, but much bigger than that and they get harder to pull start.

HOLY HEADACHE!!!!
I am trying to get my boat licenced in Wyoming, and all i can say is. Really people? I call the courthouse, they say i have to have it inspected by law enforcement. So i call the sheriff dept. They ask, "are you in town or not" yes i am in town. "You need to talk to the city police, let me forward you to them." city police, "well we only do inspections either at the sheriff dept. or we can send an officer to you." well can you send an officer to the house? the trailer isnt licenced because it wasnt necessary in oregon. "Well we only do vin inspections on mondays from 8-5..." What do i need to do to get a title for my trailer?....."you need to talk to sheriff's office...."

Big question of the day from me.

Can i pull my boat and trailer down to the sheriffs office and so they can inspect the boat and trailer at the same time? because it seems as though neither the city police or sherriffs dept knows where i need to take this D*** boat and trailer to get vin/hin numbers inspected!!!


"Yes you can do that, that would be great."

Will i get a ticket for pulling an unlicenced trailer and boat?

"Sir, we cant say either way whether or not you would get a ticket for doing that, let me forward you to dispatch, they would be able to answer that."


On to dispatch i go, getting more frustrated.

"Dispatch can i help you,"

Yes, i need to get a hin/vin inspection. Can i bring my trailer to the precinct with it not being licenced and get them inspected, and if i do so, WILL I GET A TICKET FOR NOT HAVING THE TRAILER LICENCED?

"Sir, you need to talk to the city police if you live in town. Let me forward you to them......."



All i can say, is im about to say screw it, hook my boat and trailer up, speed up and down the road until i get pulled over, hand the officer the titles and say, "BEINGS AS YOUR HERE ANYWAYS, CAN YOU DO THESE HIN/VIN INSPECTIONS FOR ME?!?!?!?!?"

....yeah boats and Wyoming aren't two words that I usually put together. Although, iboats is based out of Utah of all places, if I 'm not mistaken !?!?!? Registration is usually a piece of cake here in FL b/c we have so many boats, I guess, but I've heard some registration horror stories from other states. I wish I had a good answer for you, but your plan ain't half bad. Btw....I spent the summer after high school graduation working in Grand Teton. Beautiful country. Good luck.

In OHIO, if you have the DMV paperwork in hand, and you are heading either TO, or FROM the State Highway Patrol Inspection Post, it is not an issue.

Actually if the trailer is still sporting and Oregon plate and you don't do anything crazy along the way to get their attention, I doubt the issue will even come up.
Even if it does, you have a reasonable explanation to tell the judge.
I certainly would NOT just pay that ticket. I would fight it!

So, the update on licencing. I took the boat to the city police to inspect VIN. They did so, and charged me 5 dollars. I am happy though, because now i can get the title changed over to get it licenced. Right? WRONG!!!

So i take my hin inspection and title to the title place. THey quickly hand it back to me and say, "This boat needs a 12 digit Coast gaurd approved Vin #, we can do anything for you. You have to go to Game and Fish for them to inspect this vessel."

Well, thanks for all the help from the city of casper. Glad to know i wasted my time even talking to you about this. Anyways, now i have an appointment with fish and game to inspect it and give me the new hin #. then after i permanently attach that to the hull, i take it back and they inspect it again. Then i can get it all taken care of. ugh.
