I was trying to think of Christmas ideas. What would be good gift ideas for a boater? Let's say anything under $100. I know that my not go very far.:) Even if it is a gag gift. Something that you have that wouldn't think about as giving as gift. Key chain. Key chain with drain plug.:p

This list could go on forever. What kind of boat do they have? This would help narrow it down a bit. Life vest, radio, oar, fish finder, Captions hat, compass, extra plug, boat wax, and the list could go on.

You could always go to the useful side with items like:

- Spare bilge pump
- Hand bailing device
- Fenders
- Dock lines
- Tool kit
- Life jackets
- Battery switch
- Spare battery
- Docking Pole

Or you could go to the fun side :) (You may have to look for a good deal on a used item to stay in your budget)

- Tow ropes
- Water ski
- Tube
- Knee board

My christmas list always has a lot of boating items on it. Sometimes that just makes the winter seem so much longer....

For the guy that goes out alone, you can't beat a self-inflating PFD. Sure, it's over budget, but should be an easy sell, due to the safety factor. A decent first aid kit would easily fit the budget.

My personal favorite -- MATCHING BOAT TOWELS -- either monogrammed with boat name or not.

Easily under $100 and a very nice gift.

Try to think of the small stuff every boater needs, but is often over looked.
Fenders are good. Everyone needs them. And they need more than one. I'm going to ask for fenders from Santa.

Rope is also good. Boaters always need more rope.

Anchors. Always nice to have a spare anchor, or one of a different style in case of varying bottom conditions.

Anchor chain. Almost everyone has less chain on their rode than they should.

If a DIY'er, fluids. Outdrive oil, engine oil, marine grease, filters. Plugs and wires that sort of stuff.

Bearing buddies if they don't already have them.

Boat cleaning products.

Safety items like flares that expire. First aid kit.

Impeller.

Extra plug.

That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure I'll think of more.

knot-tying guide
Startron
gasoline gift card
Gift certificate from local repair shop for pre or post season work
Ditto on flares if you think his are old; even possessing old ones is a big fine.

Another suggestion, and a question.

Suggestion, and oil extraction pump. Don't cheap out and get the $7 hand pump from walmart. Worthless. A decent brand oil extraction pump makes oil changes a snap.

Question: Having expired flares is illegal? Even if you still have some current ones? I've been keeping my old ones in addition to my new ones. My logic was, if there was an emergency, even expired flares would probably still work, and could only help me.

It's perfectly legal to have expired flares on the boat IN ADDITION TO current ones. I and everyone I know keeps old ones aboard, too. They remain usable for years past the expiration date.

a leatherman multi tool!! ( i have the wave :) )don't know how i ever got along with out it!!
and a roll of duct tape,i think a complete mechanics tool chest is over kill,it you need more than a screw driver or pliers your not going to have the parts dept.
preventive maint. on land should take care of major break downs, before they happen on the water.

The multitool is a great idea, or at least a folding knife capable of cutting through a heavy line/rope wrapped around a prop. Dive shops sell the perfect knife for emergency rope cutting duties.
