Very interesting, I'd like to see HOW they are doing this.

All the Transformers and such, if they can make this work, sweet.

Re: new broadband coming

They have been working on this for years. I put my name on a waiting list with some outfit several years ago but I think they dropped out of the race. Most all of the obstacles have now been overcome and it will be a welcome competition to, what I believe to be, inflated cable rates.

Re: new broadband coming

Sounds like they are targeting markets not served by DSL or CABLE... so price will be high for sure to start. But once they get into areas that already have a broadband service, competition should be good.

They may also find, there is a reason DSL and CABLE are not available to some areas, not enough business to make it profitable. All residential customers is a hard way to be proffitable, you need the business customers (to rape with double rates for the same service) grrrrr

/vent

Re: new broadband coming

Just because the package is wrapped nice doesn't mean there are nice things in the box.

Several countries have tried and rejected BPL. for just some of the following

It wipes out all the low bands 0 to 60 and sometimes up to 80 MHZ.
In other words All the Shortwave bands, Amateur radio bands, Your AM portion of your stereo. FSR that everyone likes to buy etc etc
Emergency communications the whole nine yards.

The reason for this is that they are NOT complying with Part 15 under FCC regulations regarding interference to other electronics and services.

I could go on forever but wont. They have greased the proper hands to get it in On s TEST basis without complying to regulations.

Yes if your seeing or reading just one side of the story it really looks good. I agree.

This is being fought very hard AGAINST at many levels of Private Buisness and in the goverment.

And for you Big Brother watchers out there. This IS two way communications on EVERY 120 or 240 VAC outlet in your house.

MY you ofcourse I hope know I'm not blasting you or your post. Just trying to warn you is all. It just SCARED me when the first three replies didnt know a thing about this! The other side.

When Mt St Helens blew I dispatched the 9th signal battalion from Ft Lewis to put in Emergency communations. But to fill in before they could get there we contacted the local EOC (Emergency Operation Center) in the Lonview area to fill in until the Army could get there for the long haul.

All of this would not have happened if BPL had been on the power lines following Interstate 5

I'm not going to argue with anyone on this post or any other.
Not tonight but this weekend I can put some links up to show what a monster BPL is under the surface.

Ive been following this for years.

mellowyellow
I'll let it be your call as to wether I put the links in your tread or start another one.
I wont argue or try to sway anyone. Just put up the links and you deciede.
Sounds like FOX news eh? We Report you Deciede :D :D

Have a great weekend people.

Re: new broadband coming

Link, I'm sure glad you pointed that out. From all I'm hearing the hurdles are huge and the radio interference is very real, despite the wishful thinking and optimistic reports they tell the press. There are still real people reporting real interference which is not getting into the press. For the most part providers are trying their best to remedy the problems, but the remedies seem much less than satisfactory in many places. The implications are horrible- I sure hope the providers demonstrate integrity through the process regardless of all the ca$h they hope to reap. Just maybe it will work out and turn out to be a blessing, I hope so. I remain highly skeptical at this point, however. So far it is still in significant violation of the FCC's own Part 15 rules for interference as Link pointed out. The ham operators will by no means be the only ones hurt by this. The implications land ultimately upon everyone. Kiss AM radio goodbye for starters. (What, no baseballl games and talk radio?!!! Likely!!!! :( )
ARRL comments on BPL

Re: new broadband coming

I've been reading some reports from AMSAT and others, does not sound good, particularly the harmonic interference that can be caused at other frequencies.

You would think that FEMA, public safety officers, police, fire, FAA, and their unions would be all over this.

Makes you wonder if there is a hidden objective here.

The one good thing about this is stated in the last paragraph..... competition, which always drives prices down

Re: new broadband coming

Link, thanks for presenting the facts from the other side. As an amateur radio operator and Volunteer firefighter I hope more people will become better informed very soon. If this happens and I am forced to put my radio away because of interference I for one will NOT get my radio back out when the powerlines are blown down and everyone needs emergency comunications. Let em use a couple of tin cans and some kite string...ok, I probebly would get my radio back out, but will it still work??? Who knows if I'll even have my radio still. Something to think about anyway.
