New Carpet

I am thinking Spring and need to re-carpet my 24ft Aqua Patio Pontoon. I'm thinking of extending the front deck 22inches before putting on the new carpet.
That would make it easier to board the pontoon plus make a better front fishing platform. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also what is your opinion of using Home Depots "Outdoor Deck Carpeting" verses using Pontoon carpeting? The Deck carpeting is a much heavier carpet. The pontoon only weighs 1,000 lbs plus 200 Lbs for the 50 Hp Johnson so weight isn't an issue..

Re: New Carpet

I don't see a problem with extending the deck as long as it is structually sound.

Many years ago, I used some home carpet on a boat and it was a disaster. The water leaked through to the deck and caused some rotting.

I haven't had a need to recarpet a boat for many years, so hopefully the quality is now better.

I'm sure some experts will jump in here soon with more qualified advice.

Re: New Carpet

As long as you support your new deck all should be good. On the carpet part of your question Home Depot also sell marine grade carpet. Its actually pretty good carpet and at a decent cost also. I havent looked this winter I know they carried it when I was looking to replace all the carpet on my 24ft toon. I ended up buying from them, I ordered mine I spent a little more and got some carpet with a design. If i can find the receipt I will let you know what I paid.

Re: New Carpet

I just re carpeted my pontoon and used a 24oz pattern carpet that is used on most oem boats, I ordered it direct from Sparta Carpet in Ga.. I told them that the manufacture told me to call he asked what I was looking for and sent samples of chosen color
I ordered 24' of carpet and including shipping was $228.00

here is a link to my resto with a pic of carpet that I chose

Re: New Carpet

It is kind of a small pic of your boat but an extension looks doable, the first thing I though of is your deck trim will be short so you will need to deal with that and you will need some pretty stout crossmembers to support it other than that it should be just dril;ling some holes and mounting the crossmembers and wood, we will need pics of coarse.

Check here before you buy your resto stuff. Not saying it's better or cheaper than anyone else's (maybe, maybe not), but definitely a great resource for the pontoon DIYer.

Re: New Carpet

Great job Ron. The Bennington looks brand new. I know it's a big job just stripping everything. Yes I thought about the side moldings/trim. I may have to have a fabricator make one for each side. If I go 21-22 inches. I know I'll have to have two brackets welded to each toon for support. Do you think I'll need a stringer too? How will I join the new plywood to the existing plywood? Support in the middle? Right now I have a broken back and am facing two surgeries. Hopefully I'll be in good shape by spring. I'm in a body brace now and cannot lift anything more than six pounds so I don't sever my spinal cord.I sure wish I had a nice barn like that to work in.
