Building the new computer:

Motherboard: Intel D945GNT (one of the new one with the 945G chipset)

CPU: Intel P4 / 640 – 3.2GHz

Memory: 512mb x 2 (1gb)

HDD x 2: both are Maxtor 300gb SATA

Bootable media: Plextor DVD RW/CD RW-ROM

Here’s my problem:

Everything is together in the chassis, no problem entering bios setup, CPU, memory, and HDDs all show up correctly, RAID=enabled. In the bios it says the [primary] and [slave] drives are not connected. The CD-ROM should be the primary, no slave is installed. After exiting the bios setup, the system looks for the bootable media, the CD-ROM drive but doesn’t find it. I get an error msg the media (CD_ROM) isn’t found and to check the cable.

I need to load whatever I need to load from whatever CD to be able to format and partition the HDDs*. I also need to load Intel’s RAID driver (Matrix Storage Tech), and Win XP. Can’t do any of that unless the system can see the CD-ROM.

What do I need to be doing???

Resources:

- access to BIOS

- Win XP CD

- Intel Express Installer Driver CD

- Intel Matrix Storage Technology / RAID driver on floppy (I don’t have a floppy drive installed. The RAID driver should be available for downloading from Intel’s website.)

* The idea is to format both HDDs with a 25gb partition up front that is RAID 1 enabled, a mirror of each other. This partition will hold Win XP and other DVR application s/w. The remaining 275gb partitions with be RAID 0 enabled, striping for the reading/writing data files. I need to get the Intel Matrix Storage driver installed to enable this RAID scenario before loading the Win XP software, since Win XP will be mirrored onto both HDDs.

How is the jumper set on your plextor?

Typicall, you'll have jumper positions for "primary/master" "slave" or "single." If it is the only cd/dvd in the system, it should be jumpered for the "single" option. Sometimes this means no jumper at all.

Are you certain you have the CDROM data cable the right way around? That is, pin 1 to pin 1?

The cable should be keyed.

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

Thanks, RF. The jumper is in the factory default position, master. It is the only thing connected to the IDE header with an 80-conductor ribbon. I tried both ribbon cables, the one that came with the mb and the one that came with the CD drive. Same results both ways. The CD is connected to the end of the ribbon cable, the connector in the middle of the cable is not used.

Jumper options: master, slave, cable select. I also tried the CD drive with the jump set to cable select. Same problem, fails the ‘media check’ on startup.

The two HDDs are connected as to RAID headers on the mb.

There is a note in the Plextor instructions that says leave the jump off for Ultra DMA. Motherboard supports Ultra DMA 33, DMA 66 (similar to Ultra DMA), and DMA 100. Maybe I should try it w/o the jumper?

Paul, the cable is keyed. Try as I might, I wasn't able to get it in backward.
:)

Nope, same thing with the jumper removed. Still says it failed the media test, check the cable.

Are you sure that the cdrom drive is good? We get them in every once in awhile and they are dead. If you have another drive, try it. Also you might try it on the secondary channel on the MB.

Uh huh. If the light on the front of the drive is blinking, count the blinks and tell us the model number of the drive. I believe his board only has one IDE connector.

I just looked at that intel board, sounds nice. It doesn't have a secondary IDE channel though, so scratch that idea. Do you have a known good cd/dvd drive?

is the "IDE" port (channel) enabled in BIOS?

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

Zach, I have no way of knowing if the drive is defective. At this point I can only presume it is ok and something is amiss with the bios, CD-ROM jumper, or interconnect cable.

The CD-ROM is an ATAPI (E-IDE) drive. The manual says to connect with either an 80-conductor cable (what I have been trying) for best performance, but that it can also be connected to a 40-conductor cable if that is what is already in the system. There is a second header on the motherboard but it uses a 34-conductor cable that came with the mb.

The 80-pin header is for IDE. The CD-ROM is ATAPI (E-IDE) drive.
The 34-pin header is for “diskette”.

My thought was since the bios detects the two HDDs at the RAID headers, and the bios shows RAID=enabled, maybe it was disabling the IDE?!? But then how to connect CDs or DVDs?!? There’s only the one IDE header.

Paul, the light is always on, or always off when I removed the jumper and tried it. What are you thinking with counting the blinks???

EDIT: Rwise - I''ll check that in the bios.

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

Ok, this is how the DRIVE CONFIG in the bios is set (choices are in parentheses):

ATD/IDE mode = enhanced (legacy, enhanced)

CONFIG SATA as = RAID (IDE, RAID, AHCI)

S.M.A.R.T. – enabled (enable, disable) … don’t know what this is, default is “enabled”.

SATA port0 = 300gb
SATA port1 = 300gb
SATA port2 = not installed
SATA port3 = not installed

Primary Master = Plextor DVDR P – ATAPI
Primary Slave = not installed

Hard Disk Pre-Delay = [0]

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

Lets assume that the drive is ok. The second channel on there is for the floppy drive. I would do like rwse said and check the bios. Are you going to set the drives up with a raid configuration or just using two hard drives?

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

Plextors do a self diagnostic and if they detect errors they'll blink out an error code. A solid light indicates the drive at least thinks it's healthy. This lessens the chance you've got a bad drive.
Looks like your BIOS is seeing it anyway, so you don't have a connectivity problem. Check out the boot order and make sure it's trying to boot an ATAPI CDROM/DVD drive first.

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

This is how the BOOT is config’d in the bios:

Boot Device Priority:

<CD/DVD-ROM drive>
<Floppy drive>
<Hard Disk drive>
<Ethernet>

Zack – I plan to use partitioned drives, one partition on the HDDs mirrored (RAID 1) and one partition striped (RAID 0). See the last paragraph of my first posting in this thread, up at the top. I believe this mixed RAID scenarios is what is referred to as Intel’s matrix storage technology.

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

Change the IDE to legavcy and see what happens. From your description of the BIOS, it sounds like it is seeing your rom drive. SMART is a program that checks your HD and is supposed to warn you of a possible failing, I always turn it off.
What disk are you trying to boot from......what disk is in the dvd drive?

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

Zach – I will try the legacy option, but the Plextor is an E-IDE. I presume that means Enhanced-IDE, which the ATA/IDE mode in the bios is set at.

No disc in the drive, tho I have tried booting with the Intel Express Drive CD, don’t know what it is but gave it a try just in case; and of course I have tried to boot with the Win XP disc in the drive, figuring I need to format the HDDs before proceeding with loading of Win XP or the Matrix Storage driver.

That’s my next problem after I get the CD talking, how/what order to do things in to set up the HDDs before loading Win XP. I think I need to:

1-Format the HDDs (Win XP disc)
2-Load the Intel Matrix Storage driver (Intel disc)
3-Load Win XP (Win XP disc)

Edit: this is the error msg, it is always the same thing regardless of what I have tried so far:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
No bootable device – insert boot disc and press any key

Re: New Computer Build – UPDATE! ... V3.0

This is where it’s at:

CD drive jumper set to master
Using 80-conductor cable, CD drive installed at the end connecter.
ATA/IDE enabled in the bios, set to legacy
Win XP disc in the CD drive

At startup, the Plextor blinks 9 times, then goes to a solid light, then the usual error msg comes up on the screen, media test failure, check cable …
