Re: New crackdown on U.S. border

Taxable income, Rickrster, is net income. . . what's left AFTER deductions. Should that be $30K, as I said above, the tax would be approximately what I said above, according to the IRS chart.

If a married guy with kids, insurance, medical bills and a home mortgage doesn't have enough deductions to bring his income from $30K gross to $0K taxable he isn't paying attention.

If our sample illegal earned $30K and couldn't file for refund, he actually PAID the approximate $4K in withholding tax.

When that happens, the illegal pays more tax than the low income legal.

Thanks for confirming what I really said by contradicting what you wish I had said.
The problem is this:
1) If they have employment where taxes are withheld then they are stealing jobs from legitimate workers. They're not lowering prices by working for less wages like people claim.
2) If they are working under they table then they and their employers are evading taxes and breaking all kinds of labor law.
3) A person making $30,000/year is not going to have $30,000 in deductions. Food and many other things are not deductible. They still need money left to live on. The standard deduction is probably better than itemized deductions in that case. They have to pay taxes on the net like you said.

Re: New crackdown on U.S. border

This thing about low income people not paying any tax is bogus JB. Maybe those that have very little income, don't work, have many kids, and get tons of child support with their Earned Income Credit get the money back. At least the IRS is involved. Back when I thought 30K was a fair amount of income, I paid in5 to 6K in taxes. I seemed to make just enough where I wasn't able to get the EIC or other deductions. It was always just enough to put me over the poverty line not making me eligible for lots of tax deductions and programs. Even back then in the 80's I seemed to always have to send money into the state. I've never received a refund check for over $1,000 in my life while I see others that made more than me get back $3K to 5K.

Like I said earlier, all income must be reported to the IRS. I don't care who you are legal or illegal, you got to report it. If they get money back, big deal I have no problem with that, all should follow the same road as the rest of us regardless of what they make.
