Re: new deck & stringers, man this sucks

no, no core samples yet... but, in the transome pic. Do you see the vertical line that is in the middle od the pic???? what is that??? I did not get all of the floor off yet, but the bow floor feels solid. I lifted the bow seats and felt the floor (carpet), and it felt dry. I hope I only need to replace the mid-deck, and dont have to take the cap off. As long as the transome is ok. But, how would I replace the strings if I dont take the cap off. Dont they go all the way up under the bow floor?? I dont know how I would fix that?? Oh, in your hull ext thread, I cant find any pic's of your engine carge, Do you have any pic's of it?? And know what page it maybe on?? Thanks Bryan

Re: new deck & stringers, man this sucks

yup.....yer ganna have to resize the pics....they make some puters scroll left and right to read everything......

ok......the motor cage....

building a motor cage.....post #341 pg 14

the motor cage is carried on through out the stringer and deck instlation, so you can see the mounts installed with in the last ten pages or so.

as far as the line in the transom.....somthing dripped down the transom.....might even be water intrusion from under the rub rail....but i doubt it....its also possible...its an oil drip....hard to tell from a pic......but search core sample......and take lots from the transom.

you also might have to shore up the hull as you do stringer work.....

but one step at a time....:).....get your core samples first......that will tell us if the cap and motor has to come out before you start ripping.

cheers

Re: new deck & stringers, man this sucks

I was thinking about going out and price shopping for the fiberglass and resin, and the woodjust for the stringers. I still need to do the core samples for the transom. Does anybody know what ill need to be looking for and around how much of each (glass, resin, and whatever else I need) Any help on this would be great. Can I get this stuff from Home Depot, or Lowe's Hardware?? Thanks again

Re: new deck & stringers, man this sucks

today was a good day, I got some time on the boat. I feel like I got a lot done. I got the rest of the deck out and about 75% of the foam out that I needed to, to do the repair. Just a question about the foam. When I was in the getting the old stuff out, I asked my self, "could this be asbestus" or how ever you spell that word. Is this possable?? I hope not!!! Anyways, all that is left is the stringers, & the engine cage. Friday after work I am going to take some measurements, then start cutting out the stringers, or should I say "the fiberglass the used to be aroumd the wood stringers". You know its bad when you can suck out the wood with a shop-vac! I got some more pic's ill put on here over the weekend so you can see the progress. Just let me know about my foam question if you could.

Thanks, Bryan
P.S. the boat is a 1988 Starcraft medalist1901

No, It's definitely not asbestos. But always protect yourself from all that rotten crap. You can have mold settle in your lungs and set up shop there...not good. Get a good mask 1st. Use it always. Keep your work area clean from dust, cause you'll kick it up and ingest micro fine particles.

Re: new deck & stringers, man this sucks

Watch the outsides of the transom - those will be your trouble spots. If you can dig into the outside edges on the fore side of the wood with a tool (scredriver, pocketknife, fingernails, etc.) then you may have problems. I've seen boats run for years with wood falling out in chunks every time it was touched and I've seen the motor come into the compartment on a boat that seemed good. It's your call.

The stringers will probably be okay in the foreward one third or more of the craft so take a careful look at them before you decide to rip them out completely. Core them with a drill as close to the hull as you can get and look at what comes out. If it's mush, they need to come out, if it's good wood - seal it back up with good epoxy and ignore it for a while. When replacing stringers, coat all wood with epoxy over every square inch once you have it cut and fitted correctly.

I would leave the topdeck on if at all possible. Once you seperate it - you have a lot of work ahead of you that you may not have needed to do.

Just my 2 cents and worth even less :)

Oops - this is an I/O - transom not so much of a worry if it seems solid. Motor mounts are a huge issue though. Rotate the mount bolts and if they spin when they shouldn't - the wood is shot.

Clark County, close to Enon and WPAFB. Enon is None spelled backwards and that is what we have available in the few stores we have.

Re: new deck & stringers, man this sucks

uscomposites.com is a good source for fabric and resin, generally low prices but keep searching ebay for fabric...12 yards of 18 oz from USC was going to be around $107 but I found a 17 yard surplus roll on ebay for $30

Its up to you whether you want to just use exterior ply for the stringers (I did), transom (I used marine), and deck (will use marine). My local Lowes was about to order marine plywood, 1/2'' was about $55/sheet. Took a few days to ship in.

Re: new deck & stringers, man this sucks

well I did the core samples an the transome tonight...guess what???? thats right it needs to be replaced... what a shocker right...

I got to looking at it, and in oops! boat he bonded two pices of wood together and they go all the way across the back of the boat. In mine i have 1 pice of 3/4 that goes all the way across the back, then another pice of 3/4 that starts about 1.5 ft. in from both sides, than a 1/4 in that is about 6in in from the last one. Then they are all 3 glassed over with what it looks like CSM. Why would they have built this transom like this???

I wanted to know if i can take 2, 3/4 and 1, 1/4, and take it from one side to the other. all the same thickness, a total of 1 3/4in. all the way across??? and also glass them together and in, with the CSM, or should I use something else??

i know this is a dumb question, but here i go anyways.

I have a new 4.3l I am putting in the boat. It has a OMC Cobra outdrive hanging off the back and i would like to keep it. I do not have the money to put a newer up-to-date drive on it now. I dont know when I will. So I have to put the Cobra back on! But, in the future, how hard would it be to update the drive?? I know i will prob. need to put a different transom in it then, and fill the hole and get the new drive to fit. Is it even possable to put a diff. drive on this boat??

I am only 27, and this id the first boat I ever owned. I would like to get this boat out on the water this spring so we have something to do.

Well, just let me know what you think about the transom.

Thanks for all the help you can give guys Bryan
