I am restoring a 1974 IMP 255s, Ford 302, and need a new dog house over the engine. Is there a minimum clearance I should have over the top of the flame arrestor to allow for air intake and heat dissipation?

Not Really,..........<br /><br />I built mine to be Tight on the front, both sides,+ the top of my motor,...<br />For the extra space in the cockpit......<br /><br />'Course,... It's totally open to the rear....

If you are cutting a new cover that is closer than the old one, I would make sure the bilge blower is working and you have good air flow from starboard and port vents. The best vents suck air from one side, run it throug the engine compartment, and blow it out the other side.

PS--your probably already know this but gas fumes sink to the bottom of the bilge, so your blower should move air down there and push it out the other side if possible.

Or,..............<br /><br />Just put the End of the In-bound Air Tube for the Bilge Blower Down Low in the bilge.........<br /><br />It'll Suck-in from All Over.......

Thanks for all the input! Good tips on the blower setup, too. I'll make sure I get a blower intake hose down to the bottom of the bilge, and get the cat out of the other vent!

Don't forget to leave some room for noise control barrier material for heat and sound absorption.

Re: new doghouse over engine

If a little extra engine noise won't bother how you use your boat, cut two small vents foward on both the port and starboard side panels of your doghouse. All doghouse engines breath and cool from/through the open rear end of the engine compartment. Even the carb sucks its air from there. The foward half of the engine (half of the exhaust manifold horns, water pump, fuel pump, fuel line, hot oil pan, etc) is in a hot volume under the doghouse with little air circulation. Air hose ducts from gunwale vents are typically dropped in the stern bilge area, doing nothing for the foward half of the engine compartment. My 302 was hard starting, and even stalled sometimes, until I realized I had old fashioned vapor lock in the fuel line from excessive heat build-up. I insulated the fuel line and installed subject vents, using two halves of a cut up gunwale vent. It worked.

Thanks again for the help. Glasply, what should be used for the noise control barrier?

Just rebuilt mine. was trying to keep weight down, use 1/2"ply and 1 1/2 aluminum angle(sold at HD & Lowes in 3' lengths) to reinforce corners, covered with Vinyl, 3/4 Styrofoam inside for insulation. work great and one person can remove it.

The foil covered foam material is from West Marine. Size and costs are on my 2/22/06 posting in this same category. Good luck with your project.

rebars:<br />Don't extend the blower hose to the bottom of the bilge...always bring it up a bit so that you don't suck up bilge effluent. I bring mine up about 5-6 inches on a 19 foot boat. Alter yours depending upon design and over-all depth.

I used aluminum clad bubble wrap from Lowes on the inside of my outboard motor cover. Comes ina roll, two sizes. Easy to work into tight spaces and sticks great with a little Liquid Nails. Been in there two years now and it cut the noise by about one-third.<br /><br />It is the same stuff they sell in the marine stores, only about 70 percent less $$.

Re: new doghouse over engine

The stuff from West Marine is actually a fairly dense foam, covered with a thick foil. It is quite expensive, but what isn't when it comes to boats? Would be interesting to see how they compare in noise reduction. Might be a place to save a few $.
