Re: New Doral Owner

Got the Thundercraft, nicest looking 80's boat I've seen in a long while, there was definately the pride in ownership shown by the previous owner. the summer of '12 is gonna be good!

Re: New Doral Owner

Congrats on the boat JBF, the boat looks great!

I have a real noob question, I was on the boat today and I noticed that there's no drain holes around the deck. Where does rain water go? Into the bilge then pumped out? Or am I missing something. I'm a little concerned because the Bimini doesn't go all the way back and stops basically where the the engine compartment starts. So in a rain storm does the water just drain into the engine compartment?

Appreciate the help guys!

hey Alex, if you lift the floor over the engine up, you'll see the channels that drain the area overboard :)

Thanks Bois, as soon as I get it out of storage and into the water, I'll get some good pics :) I'm taking it back to my slip at the PPYC by water , which should be a fun voyage (2 locks away) Way more fun than having it towed
What Kind of boat do you have?

Thanks for the quick response JBF, I'm going to have a look tomorrow. We've been having lots of nice weather here, so I've been able to get lots done to her.

No problem Bois, we have to start somewhere, Monticellos are very nice boats!

Re: New Doral Owner

Since the temps reached the 70's and 80' about a 1 1/2 months earlier in Wisconsin, I started detailing the boat I bought last October. Since I trailer the boat and use it mostly in Lake Superior, I wanted to remove the sacrificial black bottom paint and repaint. Searched lots of forums and most recommended sanding w/80 grit paper but be careful so you don't damage the gel coat.. One guy said to try oven cleaner. OVEN CLEANER - REALLY! You got to be kidding.
Soooo, I went out and bought some oven cleaner and that night in the dark I sprayed it on the black bottom paint. What happened after 5 min was amazing. The paint was bubbling, so I took a brush and worked it for awhile. Sprayed off all the black paint w/garden hose, underneath the black paint is blue paint that I have to get off. It does work.
Now, I have to figure the right procedure to prepare and paint the bottom - maybe I should look up the guy that gave me the oven cleaner tip. Here's some pics.

wow, oven cleaner must be the panacea for boats, I was removing all the extra 80's tape stripes from my Doral last spring and someone recommended the oven cleaner for that. Fear of what it might do kept it from being applied, a heat gun and patience peeled them all off easily enough anyway. Awesome boat Bois! Looks kinda big to be towing around. Why no to a marina slip?

Why no marina slip? Well, within 2 hour drive or less I can be on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan or the upper Mississippi, can't decide which one I would call home and have a slip. I also want to trailer it up to Rainy Lake on the US/Canadian boarder and spend a couple of weeks there, then down to the Lake of the Ozarks for a couple of weeks. Then maybe I'll settle down and get a slip.
JBF - sounds like you have lots of experience around boats. I want to repaint the boat bottom and I'm looking for advice. Can you point me to a website that can recommend a primer and bottom paint? Do you have any experience bottom painting? Any recommendations?

I see what you mean Bois, lots of different areas to boat in can be fun, I used to do the same when I had a 16' runabout, lol. Fortunately, I'm on what is known as the Trent-Severn Waterway, which is a system that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay through a series of lakes/locks/canals. Really very nice and we get a lot of American boaters up here in the summer :) Heres one website if you're interested

As to bottom paint, I've always just lightly scuffed and cleaned then apply a coat or 2 of VC17 with a foam roller and a brush for the details, its easy to apply, is readily available and seems to work the best. I believe you need to put the boat in the water within 2 weeks of application.

Hey JBF 1962. I just boat a cottage on Sturgeon Lake and just bought an '88 Doral Grande. Had it out last week. Lake is low though. watch out for the rocks! Hopefully see you out on the system this summer.

Thats awesome Doncho, I used to keep a boat on Sturgeon for several years (at Long Beach) My new boat is currently on Cameron Lake (Fenelon Falls MArine) and I'm taking it back to Lake Scugog, have to keep an eye out for you as we boat through. Likely spending the night at Rivera Park in Lindsay on the way back and there will be cold beer...

That could be. My daughter is living in Lindsay and for sure I'll be cruising down that way in the summer.
