So it has been 2 months of replacing parts and welding and my engine still does not run properly so the decision has been made, a new engine will be ordered this morning!

Seams like a simple decision my boat had a 5.0 MPI engine replace it with a 5.0 MPI engine? however if I am replacing it I might as well go with a 5.7 / 350 however even when I get to that there seams to be a wide selection. Can anyone point me in the direction of the right engine for my boat (I would hate to spend 12K on an engine to find out it was designed for a cabin cruiser).

Having spent at least an hour on the mercury site they have a lot of good info on there engines but nothing on finding the right power plant for your boat. I have a Baja Islander 202 (21 foot bow rider). Any help would be appreciated, note I plan to make the order within 2 hours (need to get it shipped right away, I am starting vacation Friday).

Are you buying a new engine or a remanufactured engine? Are you doing it yourself? I would think that you could just buy a remanufactured long block from rapido marine or any other reman long block seller. But, I don't know the details or your problems.

The engine block cracked... and everything else seams to be busted (the marina forgot to winterize it before it was stored). We already tried a remanufactured engine and had problems with it after it arrived so now I am not fooling around I am going to go brand spanking new!

If you go to a 5.7 make sure you get a complete engine because your 5.0 computer won't work right.

I imagine converting to a 5.7 MPI, with all the necessary accessories, wiring and ecu would be pretty pricey.

Is the marina accepting any responsibility? The reason why I thought that just buying a long block would work is because there are a lot of parts on your engine that I just don't see becoming damaged from this...starter, alternator, carb, etc (pretty much all of the bolt ons).

Rather the marina is accepting responsibility or not has nothing to do with this thread.

While swapping out a 5.0 to a 5.7 is an easy, fairly inexpensive thing to do on a carbed engine, the op has an MPI, and at that point things do change.
Not only does the ECU change, but possibly other sensors, ignition parts, wiring etc. on the engine as well.

Now, if converting to a New or remanned complete bobtail MPI engine is what is being considered, you would still need to consider the gear ratio in the drive. is it different from the 5.0L?

There were a handful of these boats made with the 350mag (most, like ours, had the 5.0mpi). Both versions came with the 1.62 drive ratio unless they were high altitude boats in which case they were built with the 1.81 drive.

It's almost a 70mph boat with the 350mag. If it was me I'd probably go with the 5.0mpi.
