Hey all,

I am delivering my boat to North River marine tomorrow to have a new 90 HP Yamaha put on it.

Is it worth the extra money to have a stainless steel prop put on it? It will come with an aluminum prop and I have read on this forum that ss props have better performance. Why?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Searun1

If you go to frequent asked questions and read on prop selection there is a great post by walleye.

If you are spending the big bucks to get the new motor. I would go with the stainless prop. You will get more performance from it, as they are lighter, stronger and do not flex as much as aluminum. They will also take small underwater hits better than Aluminum, without dinging them up.. See if the dealer will cut you a deal on the stainless, in exchange for the aluminum prop..

Stainless props DO NOT WEIGH LESS and generally slow the boat down incrimentally if used in the same manor as aluminum. Stainless WILL last longer but cost twice as much to repair as aluminum. In addition IF you strike an underwater object, because of the extra tuffnes of stainless steel, you increase your chances of damaging the lower unit because the stainless prop wont give. NOW!!!.....If you run the stainless prop in surface effect and tune the height and angle of your outboard carefully, you WILL gain some performance. Do not expect much below the speed of 40 MPH.
If you run in a silty environment or have a high performance boat, stainless would be a good choice.
