Re: New Engine vs. Rebuilt

I don't think $12K is a drive and engine.It should be a repower.If not, RUN away quick.
A repower gives you everything, including the tramsom and gimbal housing,as well as a new Alpha Gen II outdrive and engine. You might want to even look at fuel injection, but now we are raising the price (but not all that much).

The main problem doing this is how solid your tramsom is.If it's water logged, new boat time.

Some other expenses may be wiring harnesses etc. BUT your boat, however old it is,has a complete new propulsion system.

DHP

Re: New Engine vs. Rebuilt

Why not rebuild what you got and replace parts w/ new as necessary? ie: carb, ignition etc. A machine shop can get what you want done at an affordable price and maybe get you some extra ponies at the same time (stroker 383), look into a reputable machine shop and then a marine mechanic to rebulid the out drive while you got it out. You'll learn alot along the way and end up knowing what you got. And there's alot of help and opinions here to guide you on your way.

If the boat will ever be in salt water you should look into adding a FWC setup to help protect your investment as well.

Myself and others are trying to figure out what you have, what happened to it and what you are left with ? So far all we know is that the boat was not sunk and your brother-in-law gave it to you. We need to know the above to give you an opinion. Was the boat an old salt water dog and or was the block cracked from freeze damage ? Is the drive missing or is it still there ? Knowing exactly what you have to work with can make all the difference between recomending getting what you have rebuilt or scrapping it and going new.

Re: New Engine vs. Rebuilt

And Thanks to thoses who have talked me out of a 12,000.00 dollar set up. The place that I am buying the remanufactured engine and drive (5.7 Alpha 1) Is called Ct. Boat Repair, you can visit the website @ ctboatrepair.com they seem to be very reputable.
When I get the set up, I'm sure I'll have plenty of Questions for all you guys. As a matter of fact I have one now: Besides extra parts I might need to get the engine and outdrive in, Anyone have a ball park figure on what the labor charge would be to have it professionally installed?? If you're Paying the Going Labor Rate in your area,..........

With the $2500.00 you've Already dropped,.............
I'd say that Your Total Dollars Spent will be approaching that $12,000.00 that you mentioned.........

Re: New Engine vs. Rebuilt

Mark, the price you were quoted seams quite cheap for a COMPLETE remanned MARINE engine and drive. My first advice would be to slow down, ask lots of questions and make sure you are getting what you think you are getting. This could turn into a cash-cow real quick.
For the price you were quoted, I would expect you to get a remanned SHORT BLOCK and remanned outdrive. Even IF they are supplying a long block and drive, you are still very far from getting what you need. If, on the other hand, you are really getting a complete engine(intake and exhaust manifolds, carburetor, water pump, alternator, distributer, ignition module, fuel pump, etc.) plus an out-drive....that is one he11 of a deal.....is it guaranteed ? What about engine mounts ? Wiring harness ? Engine coupler ? Does your boat still have the transom plate and bell housing ? What about gimbal bearing and bellows?
If you could take a picture of what is left in your boat, and get a picture of what you are buying, that would go a long way towards sorting this all out. I don't want to see you spending the next six months on ebay looking for parts.

The only things left in the boat are the part that goes thrugh the transom (bell housing?) with the two hydralic pistons, the hydralic pump and motor for the trim and the wiring harness.
