Re: New ETEC Outboards

Verado = heavy (very heavy) and Yamaha four strokes all require the same maintenance your car does - namely oil and filter changes, valve adjustments, timing belt replacement and if these are neglected some very serious engine damage can occur. This is especially true with timing belts. The E-tec is a two stroke but is as "clean" or cleaner and as economical or more economical than four strokes and requires far less routine maintenance and far fewer moving parts. The engines are generally lighter than comparable four strokes. All of that said, there are those who prefer a four stroke and those who prefer the performance edge and less maintenance on the E-tec. You pay your money and take your choice!!! They are all good engines.

Was down at the St. Louis Boat Show yesterday and saw alot of E-tecs and Verados. Man those Vernado's are HUGE motors! Love those E-tecs! They look like they would be fast just sittin' there :D . It was my first up close seeing all of the newer motors and it was impressive...

Re: New ETEC Outboards

Had a Honda rep at the NY boat show try and tell me how much better their product was than all other motors. When I asked about the better torque curve, power to weight ration, fewer maintenece costs and ability to stand up to saltwater better of the Etec, he just blinked and had no answers. I swear some of those guys just read their own little pamphlet and regurgitate what they read and have no idea how an engine even works. He figured that since he had one of those engine cut outs he could show me how cool a Honda engine was. He tried to sell me on how since you have a whole stroke of the piston before it pushes exhaust out, that the exhaust has time to cool, and therefore it's smoother and more economical. When I offered up that in the time it took that 4 stroke to push exhaust out, and waste a stroke, a 2 stroke E-tec would have just made another power stroke, he just laughed.

My advise is do some research and find out exactly how and why things work the way they do, before you have one of these glorified salesmen feeding you a bunch of lies.

It's all personal preference and opinion, but even after years of working on all types of engines, I can't see any advantage of any 4 stroke, at least in the marine world, over a 2 stroke.

Verado's are as big as they are because they are all supercharged 4 strokes, they gotta be ballsy, but to me it's just more stuff to go wrong on you out in the water. Racing is one thing, but 50-80 miles in the ocean is another. I don't need any belts snapping on me out there, or any valves burning up at 5500 RPM.

Like I said personal preference and opinion. And mine is that the E-tec is the best thing on the market right now, hands down.

Re: New ETEC Outboards

I was at an E-Tec dealer today. They are so proud of them that I think the sales won't good around here. I was quoted $19,000 for a E-Tec 250 installed on my boat. WAY TO MUCH money. I was quoted $16,300 + guages and installation (about another $1200-1500)in British Columbia B.C. last fall. Thought that was too high also. I will have to keep looking. If it comes down to the end, I will have to go with price (Suzuki), about 5K cheaper.

I see 'em for $14500 to $15000 depending on shaft length not installed nor gauges at Eds.

Anyone have trouble with the Etec video freezing about half way through?

Re: New ETEC Outboards

I saw the infomercial. got my tools for sale.
seeing how ill be outta bidess according to that salesman.
I gotta see that 3 year maint schedule on the boats used around here that will see 100 hours a week sometimes. most the boats with twins here will go 4-500 hours a season. then I have some that will do 10 hours a year. both break but for differing reasons.
give me a plain jane motor with no quick nor prime strat with a CDI IGN and a set of carbs and ill pull 3-4 thousand hours out of it.
but they dont make them anymore so I hope the etec will live as long as some of the carbed motors did, or at least longer than some of the other DFI motors. time will tell.
