Re: New Exhaust Manifold

Got access to an impact gun?

Otherwise place Allen wrench in it and strike with nylon tip hammer. Or a length of pipe on Allen wrench. Hardest part will be to hold the manifold.

I recommend you DO NOT use heat. Expanding a tight plug may crack the manifold.

Try some penetrating oil or put it in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Last night I inserted the head of a bolt into the plug and tried removing it by grabbing the shank of the bolt with a 2' pipe wrench...........I broke 2 bolts then gave up..........am having a difficult time finding a 14mm allen wrench.

Ayuh,.........

The Impact will do what just plain ole Torque won't do............

Even a Manual(Beat it with a BFH kind) Impact Driver might do the Trick..........;)

Torque wrenches are not for loosening stubborn bolts. Use a breaker bar or impact wrench or hammer. You can wreck a torque wrench that way.
Good luck. May just have to drill it out and easy out the remaining threads.

Is this the old manifold? leave the plug in there! just go out, and get a new plug that size, looks like it might be pipe plug size, 1 1/4", or 1 1/2",or 2", any plumbing supply, it's gotta be cheaper, & easier.

Oop's! Sorry, I see it's your new manifold and you need to get it out, I'd heat it up some with a small propane torch but not too much, then cool it down quick, then try it.

I'm afraid to use a hammer............don't want to crack the manifold.

Heat applied gradually, and concentrating it on the plug, should cause it to expand some, then gradually letting it cool, and putting ice on it afterward, should shrink it some, then trying loosening it, (but it still needs to be jarred like with an impact wrench), this might do the trick, at least that's what I'd do.

who taught you guys how to use a torch???? if your trying to remove a plug/bolt etc you heat AROUND what your trying to remove.... you don't heat the plug itself.... heating a plug/bolt is just going to make something that is a tight fit... a tighter fit.

Don't take offense, I was only trying to help, I yield to those who have more experience working with heat, but I do think it would help applied effectively.

Ayuh,......... I mess with Heat once'n awhile,........
There's a set of "Bluetip Wrenches" strapped into the back of My Daily Driver,.........:)

Actually,......... The Absolute Best way I found to Loosen Stuck(aka. Rusted) bolts,+ nuts,+ studs,+ shafts,+ Etc........
Is to heat the offending part to a nice Glowing Red condition,.....
And,... Splash it with Water,.....Quenched as Quickly as possible.........

It'll come Off with Ease..............

But,.......
In Tony's case,.... It's a stuck New plug,..... An Impact Gun is the Best answer........

If I were doing this on an Older set of Manifolds,......
I'd heat Just the Plug with the O2/Ac torch,+ Quench it......Shrink it......
And you'd probably Still want an Impact Gun then.......

Right on Bond-o, I thought that might be the way to do it, but I didn't want to commit myself  or cause poor Tony anymore grief, I see he said the water passages are not open now?

Spoke to GLM..........they said I may have to punch this "blockage" out.......it does appear to be very thin..........possibly have something to do with the casting process?

Will know more later.........

What am I missing here? Every Manifold I ever bought came with a bag of gaskets and plugs...never had one with plugs installed???? AND you say there is casting flashing blocking the hole to top it off?? I would be having a word with someone, up close and personal
