This phase of my family room make over is done (well, 95%). This is the Ash Engineered Hardwood flooring by Kahrs that works as a floating floor over a concrete slab. This concrete floor is above grade and dry as a bone in Arizona. Nonetheless, I installed the required vapor barrier to comply with warrentee specs. Neat part of the vapor barrier is that it incorporates a layer of styrofoam to deaden sound and adjust for unlevel floors. Lucky for me, my floor was as flat as a good concrete job gets.

This is a layer of Ash hardwood bonded to a sub layer of plywood making it very stable. Comes in 8"x86" pieces.

PS, I added those casters to the coffee table. Dummy me buys brass casters for a table that has pewter knobs. And I didn't notice util a few weeks later! LOL

Thanks! Sounds like my kind of install guy.

Best part of this project is its my last house project before starting the next boat project.

I can hardly wait to finish!

Re: New floor is in! Boy am I tired!

This is the part still left to do. The 2x8 foot raised hearth took up too much space in the room, and was dangerous to kids rough-housing. So I took it out and now will have a smaller 2x6 flush to the floor hearth. The fireplace will be finished off with stone in the red, blue and green tones.

These tiles should end up level with the wood floor after a layer of thinset morter is spread underneath. I hope, I hope, I hope. 8)

Looks nice Mark! I have to sand and refinish the hardwood in my house. We've been here 2 1/2 years and I've been doing numerous remodeling projects including a bathroom addition. The hardwood is on my very long list of projects.

Hey Tommays! Great minds think alike 8)

I like the way you finished the edge of the tile with a parallel strip.

The stone yard says it will take TWO TONS of stone to do 6ft wide by 9ft tall (this room has a 9ft ceiling). We have been looking at stone for the fireplace and chose something that is a mix of various local stone. Mostly irregular shapes, a few round that are all split. I think I'll tell them to leave out the round ones when they do the scoop and mix (one scoop from this pile, one scoop from that pile, etc)

I'm trying to get this effect (yep those are my kids) but instead of the grey/blue/brown colors we want red/blue/gray/green:

Hey nice choice of colors Mark! Check this out, my parents choose these colors for their floors! Pretty close to the same huh?

They haven't taken the tape off the transition because the installers didn't glue it down all the way. They're supposed to come finish the job tomorrow.

Living like this is pure hell isn't it?

BTW, those little crosses you put between the tiles are supposed to be put in the corners to keep the tile square, not where I see them in the photo you provided.

Your parents have a nice looking floor! It looks nice against those tiles.

Yeah, those crosses are supposed to lay flat, but I find its easier to stand them up when just doing a layout and I was just using them to get the proper 1/4" spaceing between tiles. When doing the layout, if you lay them flat, they tend to slide under the tiles when you shove a whole row of tiles down an inch or so. If you stand them up, they stay between the tiles. Cool, no?

When I actually lay the tiles, I lay the spacers flat at the corners of the tiles. Just like they were intended. d:)

There were a lot more standing up, but a little 3 year old came along and stole them! I later found them in the washing machine. LOL!

I know it probably looks funny the way I have them! 8)

Re: New floor is in! Boy am I tired!

Here is the latest.... Used to have a computer on a desk in the corner of the room. Always ran out of space in the desk. So with the make over, I ordered two desk cabinets, a center drawer, and two overhead wall cabinets to make a nice work station.. The cabinets are maple in a honey/satin finish. The desk top is 3/4" ply with a birch veneer and 3/4" quarter round glued to the edge. I stained it Minwax "red oak" and finished with their gloss water base clear coat. I wanted it to match the cherry topped maple end table you see in the forground. It came very close. If you look close you can see the top I made has bowed up a bit. Its not screwed on yet, and I think I might put it on a set of horses with some weight for a few days to take the bow out. Sound good?

Also, there is a baseboard hot water pipe running along the wall to the right, and I had to cut a piece of 3/4" maple to 1-1/2 inch taperd to space the cabnet away from the wall, and the darn wall is bent like a potato chip, so the spacer is tapered. Look close you can see the filler is thicker at the top than on the bottom.

Having a house where nothing is square just makes all projects that much more fun.
