I recently purchaced a 19.5 foot bayliner with a blown force 120. I have also purchased another 120 force motor from a marine dealer, it has good compresion and runs well, would like to know how to keep it running well eg: fuel octain and any special mesures to take, as have heard not the best engines in the world.
Thanks

Re: New Force

Seriously, the best thing you could do for safety, and reliabilty, would be to park your boat under a newer Johnson/Evinrude, or even a MERC. Doesn't have to be a new one, just a good one.......I've seen way too many Force/Chrysler engines being towed in, than any and all other makes combined........ :(

Re: New Force

Brian, jump over to the Chrysler/Force forum and put the question there. They got some good Force wrenches over there that can help. Even though the Force engine has a bad rep for blowing cylinders, I've seen many of them run for years without a hitch. The reason is good pm and maint. and doings things right.

Good Luck.

Re: New Force

87 or 89 octane, with NO alcohol.

Change the impeller and waterpump housing every year, as overheating is a major cause of engine failure.

Check your sparkplugs often, watching for clean plugs, which would indicate water is getting into a cylinder, or a lean fuel condition, and doing damage.

Decarb the engine atleast once per year. Or every 40-50 hours of use.

Overhaul the carbs, and have the carbs linked & synced.

Use a good fuel condition like SeaFoam.

Brian Watt,

Part of the reputation that Force earned was due to the type of owner. Most were newbies that had no idea of how to maintain one, or any outboard for that matter.

True, the Force is old technology yet with some TLC, many have had very good service out of them.

Follow the advice of the folks over in the Chrysler/Force thread and you'll be OK.

Re: New Force

I guess I should feel bad for posting my opinion here (kennys), but to help someone with a choice at hand, I would never recommend the second Force for parts. A newcomer shouldn't have to go through the crap of fighting their way along with a second-hand, zero technology engine when the sole reason we are here (I thought) was to help...again, just my opinion..........
