Greetings from East TN. 15 year inflatable boater.

These are my 15th and 17th boats. The Achilles LSI 10 foot 2inch was a tender for a 30 foot Pursuit we had for a few years and we bought it new. It is powered with a 5 HP two stroke Mercury which has just been infallable.

The Zodiac is a 1999 480 DL Yachtline with a 70 HP 2 Stroke Yamaha. This boat handles extremely well and is very dry, stable and with the deep Vee RIB eats waves or at slower speeds just corks over them. Both these boats have been from the Florida Keys to the Great Lakes and points between.
It took over a year to track down a good used 480 they just aren't very common. This one was 3 years old when I found it in Grand Haven, MI, I have run it for 8 years.

Home is now Lake Tellico (Little TN River) following 20 years in FL. My Brother in Law and I (Iron Men in Rubber Boats) have taken to boat camping on Lake Fontana, bordered by the Smoky Mountain National Park and NC, Nantahala National Forest.

Enjoy the pics.

P10100601-1.jpg

Cruises nicely at 15-20 mph. WOT 42 on smooth water 1/4 tank and one person. I put a bimini on last year.

P7210003.jpg

Barely noticeable behind a V8 Explorer. Easily launched a landed solo.

P7210014.jpg

The NPS runs a shuttle boat to trailheads that tie into the Appalachian Trail.

Two LSIs Ready for Lake Camping/Cruising.

P7270008.jpg

Loaded with camping gear for the trip up the Lake at about 7 MPH. Once unloaded its back to the relaxing 5-15 mph. Doing 4 day trips it took us three years to cover the Lake from Dam to Bryson City, NC and finally as far as we could go on the Nantahala River. Bring plenty of your favorite libations as some of the Counties are dry. Ice and fuel are conveniently available.

There are remote (SMNP Wilderness) campites only available by watercraft. During the week boat traffic is almost non existant.

Smoky Mountains live up to their namesake.

Campsites are primitive, haul it in haul it out and no facilities.
Firewood is plentiful and the altitude keeps the temperatures moderate and perfect for lightweight bag sleeping in one man tents. The water is crystal clear and comfortable cooling off and long, languishing swims.

Bumper boats again?

Key Largo

P1010039.jpg

Ponce Inlet. Perfect for ICW cruising and then through the inlet rip and into the Atlantic for some "swell" rides.

The LSI boats from Achilles are really nice. They have changed the design a little since the 1999s. The boat weighs in at about 80 lbs. the Mercury 5 at about 45. Both managable by one person. As a one person boat they are amazingly quick and nimble. With two persons not bad in light chop and will still plane readily.
With the five horse single cylinder the range on a remote tank and the built in give this rig an amazing ability to cover distance; even when running at 90 percent. Quite a difference between the shorter LSI and 8 HP 2 cylinder which uses almost twice the fuel at about the same speed. I'm thinking 6 hp 4 stroke single cylinder for a 20% HP increase but the way this rig is balanced I am wondering if I can really improve much on performance. A 12.2 and 6 might be interesting. I don't want to get overweight since this is a go anywhere, do anything rig.

you seem to be a real pro re inflatables. I know nothing about them - i have a regular litte 16 footer with a 48 horse outboard but i'm considering a second little boat and came across a walker bay for $2700 including the sail rig, trailer, cover and a motor - but i don't know what kind/size motor it is yet. The boat looks very new in very good shape - about 8' i think, one big tube going around the hard bottom v hull. Is walker bay well thought of - have you had one and why or why not??
How do you store an inflatable in the winter ? (wisconsin) - the garage is taken up with the other boat.... Can i deflate it and store the hull on it's side (or on the transom) against the wall? Will the cold harm the inflatable part if i leave it on or off - (not on it's side in that case)? Just a few questions before i call the guy about the details - (like what kind of motor?)! Thanks for any help/advice you can send my way!

Walker Bay is a good brand well constructed, you can keep that sib over winter lying inflated against a wall inside garage, top air if needed to maintain some tube rigidity against floor. About motor, which brand and HP comes along the combo ?

Some more photos. Hope to do a few days of boat camping soon.

One of the great aspects of inflatables are their stowed compact size. Here we have two boats, two motors and a weeks camping gear, with lots of ice and libations.

Key Largo area on the backside.

P1010042.jpg

Circumnavigation of Anclote Island, Tarpon Springs (left coast) area.

P4080003-1.jpg

Weeki Wachee River Hernando County, FL. Fun on a spring fed fresh water river that flows to the Gulf. Not uncommon to see Manatee, Eagles, Gators, and an occassional Otter.

P1050003.jpg

Sometimes in the Florida Keys it makes more sense to offload the boat and put it in a slip for a few days instead of the old in out.

P1010003.jpg

South Anclote Island, just a skip and a jump to Honeymoon, Caladesi Islands and Clearwater Beach. What fun.
