All of the gears are blown up in my 1985 Force 85hp. Should I look for a used lower unit, or can I buy just the gears themselves? Its completely torn down right now. This is my first time tearing down the lower end. I beleive the forward/reverse clutch (has roller bearings in it and what looks like a clutch disk) is chewed up due to the metal bits getting in there, so that needs to be replaced too.

Is there a place online I can buy parts? I found other parts, but no gears.

It would be cheaper and less hassle to get a used lower unit. Replacement gears have been out of production for many years. I've seen new ones on several auction sites and they want big bucks for them. Then you have the problem of properly shimming the gears for proper clearance. A used lower unit would be your best bet.

Thanks. A buddy of mine said he found some gear sets, but they did want big bucks for them. So a used lower unit is what I will look for.
