went to a '78 Evinrude 115 HP on the boat. Put new ignition coil and starter from my '75 85 HP Johnson - got spark on all 4 cylinders! doing what was recommended I put a rebuild kit for the water pump in the lower unit.

Went out for a test ride last night, struggled with the control line adjustment. Found what appears to be the problem. The linkage, (not control cable) bottoms out against the motor before the shift lever goes down enough to put it in reverse. I had screwed the shift lever all the way into the lower unit, then backed off 1 turn to make sure it wasn't tight. I'm guessing now the rod should be screwed out more. Is there a guide or rule for this or simply catch the fewest number of threads you think you need?

thanks in advance for information and for all the help in the past.

also - would anyone know if the lower unit from my '75 85HP Johnson would fit on this '78 115HP Evinrude? Looks as though if I switch the shift lever and water pump housing it would work.

And now you know that working without a manual amounts to tinkering (grin).

Measurement must be from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole.

1978 - All V/4 Models = (L) 21-53/64" - - (XL) 26-53/64" plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral.
