Hello, am new to boating and would appreciate any advice on this. I just bought a small pontoon boat, approx. 18 1/2 ft. Am looking at two motors. The first is a 1990 Johnson 88hp 88 special, no trim, no controls, no warranty, but runs good, and I'm told low hours. Cost $850. The second is a 1990 Johnson 40hp Tracker. Oil injection removed, don't know if that is good or bad. No trim, Comes with controls, and 6mos. warranty. Cost $900. My wife, who is frugal. Likes the 40hp, because of the warranty, much better gas mileage, [she thinks] and much cheaper to maintain. Me I like the 88hp, theory being the engine doesn't have to labor as much, power when needed, about the same gas mileage, about the same to maintain. Thanks for any advice.

What's the boat rated for?

Its not a brand name boat. It was hand built by a aircraft engineer, using aircraft material for the deck, and salvaged pontoons, and the rest new parts. Its very well built. No rating. I understand it had a 50 hp previously.

It finally dawned on me, I placed this in the wrong forum. Sorry, I can't figure out how to move it.

my buddy has got a 21ft tracker pontoon with a 75hp merc tracker. he had it upgraded to the 75 from the stock 40.
he was very happy about that.
-
the 75hp pushes it great with 4 adults and will still pull a skier up.
<on a calm day>
-
if you can go with the 88hp.
only if it will handle it safely!
but if in doubt go with the 40hp.

you will still get where ever you are going just slower.
its just my opinion. not worth much.
