Hey guys. I apologize if I'm not posting this in the correct spot. I'm new to boating and just bought my first boat. It's a 1987 SeaRay, 23' open bow. The boat has a 5.7 Mercruiser - Alpha I. It seems to be in great shape. I took a mechanic buddy (automotive) of mine with me and he checked what he knew how. Compressions good and engine seems to be in good working order. I know nothing about the history of this boat. I bought if off of a guy who only had it for three months before losing his job and wife. He didn't want to sell it, but needed the money. Before winterizing (it's in a heated shop right now) what do you suggest I need to do and/or check? Thanks in advance!

Fluids: are they milky or whitish? Signs of water intrusion. Could be minor or major. You always change fluids like outdrive oil as part of winterization, just in case water is there but can't be seen.

Make sure zincs are in good shape.

Make sure the boat and all the bilge is very clean and dry.

If possible, get to know the exhaust risers and gaskets very well. They don't last long, and you want to keep water out of the engine! Usually, maintenance is all it takes, and never put off this part of it.

Re: New guy needs help!

Welcome aboard! are youi anywhere near a body of water if so I would @ least try to run it on the water I know it's cold even snowing here but try to do so to see if it's gonna need any work to make it ready for spring. If not go to the stickies posts in the I/O forum and download the manual for your engine and outdrive and start reading I can first off tell you, your gonna have to drain all the water out of thee engine and manifold (blow out excess and fill with anti freeze if you prefer not necessary)to avoid a cracked block treat gas with stabilizer fog engine and cylinders to start. but for now get the manuals and start reading and then hang out and post in the I/O forum you will get more help than you need believe me!!!!!!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your help. By the way, I did have it on the water before I bought it.

If you can keep it in the heated shop your a head of the game.

Look around in the forums and there is many threads dedicated to putting your boat away for the winter and or getting it ready for the spring. Happy boating.

Welcome to the best boating sight out there.
