Hello everybody i've been looking at this site for a long time even bought stuff from here but never signed up for the forum, now i'm desperate. Let me start by asking, how do you check the timming, is it by turning the key with fuel disconnected so it won't start, thats what i understood in the manual i put it at 3 while turning. After doing that it starts right up, it never did before but now it idles rought in gear while in the water, its idleling at 750-800 i've adjust the idle air mix screws the way it says in the manual but nothing, the funny thing is when you tilt the motor up it idles perfect, other than that it runs perfect starts everytine you turn the key. I replaced plugs we've done fuel pump compression is good and even on all cilynders. The motor is a 115 mariner 1993 and it has that 2+2 thanks
ps sorry for the punctuation i'm just not good at writing

Re: New guy w/motor trouble

Welcome to the iboats forum. I know the experts will be able to help you as I have read many posts stating a motor can run good on the muffs but run lousy once it gets backpressure from the water. I'm sure one will chime in shortly.

Yes, run the fuel out of the carbs and let the engine set for a few minutes then move the spark advance lever to where it is seated on the max advance screw then crank the engine and set if at 20 degrees BTDC.
Usually an engine that the idle improves when tilted slightly up is set to rich or has low float levels
