I just recently bought my first boat and I have plenty of questions.

I have a 1965 Johnson 17' runabout with a 1966 Johnson 100 HP v4. I know, I know. old vintage junk but it's my first one and it's all I can afford for now.

my first question is about the power tilt. particularly what kind of fluid does it take and how do I check or fill it. logic and my 20 plus years of automotive experience tell me brake fluid would be bad for something this close to the water. is it some engine oil or hydraulic fluid?

next I need to know how to replace the water pump.


also how do I maintain the lower unit lube? what kind of oil does it take and how much do I need?

sorry if I am asking too many question up front. I want to do things right and there is not much for local sources of info. the dealers don't want to work with someone who has such and old machine.

junk junk junk? please u will love the motor once its runnning.

first off check compression in the motor make sure its good then check spark. u take the lower unit to change the water pump impeller and gear is 85-95 weight gear oil make sure u put on new gasket when putting on the screw back on.

your first step is to get an OEM Johnson manual for that motor, outboardbooks.com or ebay, do not buy seloc or clymer. your lower unit is electric shift. not sure of the correct oil, but here is the procedure.

Changing lower unit oil

There are 2 straight slot screw on the starboard side of the lower unit. Top is vent plug, bottom, drain and fill plug. ( do not touch Phillips head screw).

Remove the bottom plug, put container under lower unit, now remove the vent plug, while the oil is draining, replace the seals on the plugs part # 311598, buy several of these, ( they are a one time use item)

Walmart and many places sell a little hand pump. To use to fill the unit, you insert the tube into the bottom hole, and pump till oil reaches the vent hole. Install the vent screw, then remove hose, install the drain-fill screw, clean up mess.

The screws can be hard to get out, do not mess up the head. You may need to employ an impact screw driver to break them loose.

i have been using power steering fluid, for tilt, but older one may use something else.

Hi Todd

Congratulations on your first boat.

You know what they say, the two happiest days in a man's life: when you buy your boat and when you sell your boat.

Get the books and take your time. You might just have a cream puff, that some old lady used to only drive on Sundays.

Try not to get overwhelmed with all the big things wrong and look at it as one challenge at a time (after following the advise of the posts before mine)

my first day was last Monday. it has slowly gone downhill since then. on Wednesday I discovered my transom is rotted badly. I mean REAL bad. I will not let it get me down as I already have a plan on how to fix that. my Dad was a body man and I have plenty of local support for that. it's just the motor that I am unsure of. I will have to get one of those books I guess. thanks for the help guys. PS fluid huh? sounds good to me. I also looked through the FAQ forum and saw how to make a motor stand. I also got ideas on how to test the engine and water pump at home. having a shared driveway it should make the neighbors happy.
