I've got a 20 foot pontoon with a yamaha 150 pro v 2 stroke motor with a solaris 19 pitch prop not sure of the other dimensions th dealer did say it had bigger ears than a normal prop cause it's made for a toon well my first question is this a good prop or should I look for somthing better? Secondly will a yamaha motor work with a tach that use to be hooked up for a mer motor 40 hp? He said on the dyno it was showing 5600 rpms but on my tach it's only showing 4300 sounds fishhy to m cause the 40 would show 5500 rpm on the tach? And one more question is 36 mph sound right for this set up or should I expect more I hear guys on here with 24 footers with smaller motors getting close to that thanks in advance I'd appreciate any comments

Your question would get a quicker answer if it was in the prop forum but since you are here, I'll answer it for you. Yes, pontoon props have rather large rounded, uniformly shaped blades. Whether the pitch is right however is difficult to say because we have no performance data to go by. You need to put what you consider an "average load" on the pontoon and then make some wide open throttle runs while observing the tach (after you determine it is operating correctly). The best prop is one that allows the engine to operate at the engine manufacturers recommended wide open throttle rpm. If the engine cannot reach the top of that band or very near it, then you have a prop with too much pitch. If the engine easily revs beyond the upper end of the range you have prop with too little pitch. I'm guessing that the tach is probably miscalibrated (there is a dial on the back). I also suspect that a 19P prop on a pontoon even with 150 hp may be too much. But before you buy a prop, verify that the tach is accurate.

If you can believe your dealer, then you probably have a 'pontoon' prop. If the 5600 RPM's was WOT, then the 19 pitch is about right unless your boat is often run near full load at high speeds. Then you may want to consider a 17 pitch.

Secondly will a yamaha motor work with a tach that use to be hooked up for a mer motor 40 hp? He said on the dyno it was showing 5600 rpms but on my tach it's only showing 4300 sounds fishhy to m cause the 40 would show 5500 rpm on the tach?

I'm not sure about the Merc tach working on a Yami. Apparantly it won't, because your setup should certainly produce more than 4300 RPM's.

If the 36 is GPS speed, then it sounds a tad low but not unreasonable. Never trust the onboard speedos.

Re: New here first question

full load would be me in the boat and one other person tackle and all about 400 pounds not counting the weight of the boat which i dont know its a fisher freedom 200. and the dealer said the tach was off that on his dyno it showed the rpms i stated so if the adjustment doesnt work that you mentioned i guess i can get another one? it worked fine on the merc 40 just not on this 150 hes gonna let me try a 17 monday so we will see what happens so is solaris a good brand brand or are there others i can get better performance out of thanks guys i appreciate you maybe a mod will see this and post it in the right section sorry and the speed was gps speed would i benifit more with a prop with 4 ears vs three? oh im also getting strakes on it in a couple of weeks

Solaris builds a good prop. Make sure you tell them it is for a pontoon.

You may also take yours to a prop shop and have it rebuilt for a 17 pitch pontoon. I recently did that with a stainless prop for $85 with outstanding results.

Re: New here first question

I'm not no outboard guy but isn't the 40 a 3 cyld and the 150 a 4 cyld. Tach won't work. My Tach has a selector switch on the back of it to set what engine config you have....

Ummmm...put it in the water with a good tach. :p Sorry smart butt, I know.:D
