I have been out of boating for a few years and I am looking to pull the trigger, hopefully today.

I am looking at a 99 Bryant 21 foot bowrider. I had it checked out and everything is pristine per the survey. The boat is actually 20'-6" and has an 8 foot beam. It is powered by a Volvo Penta 5.0 GI (fuel Injected) with an SX Drive and a 19P SS prop. The owner claims the boat does 62MPH on GPS.

Like I said, I have been out a while (going back to the carbed days), but I am finding it hard to believe a 5 liter even with fuel injection will put out the hp to get 62MPH out of a 3400lbs boat.

Am I wrong here?

I guess what I am challenging is the honesty of the seller.

Day and night, she'll run 52-55. All day and night. She'll run a GPS-measured 62 if running at wide open throttle (WOT) while following the current/flow (which is moving at 5-8 MPH). If you turned 'er around and were heading against the current and looked at the GPS speed, she could even say less than 50.

GPS speeds are speed over land. If you are running at 55 over the water at full throttle and she's getting a piggyback ride over the tide/current/river, it will jack up the speed (and lower it if going against the tide/current/river).

That's a 52-55 MPH boat.... all day and night. Over 60 = not so much. Boat mags are riddled with articles on boats with very similar setups.

55 mph on a boat like that will feel awesome.

Thanks Philster,

I thought 60s sounded wrong. My old 21' FourWinns ran in the low 40s with an OMC 5.0 HO. Well 40s would be my best estimate (No GPS back then).

More importantly it would be safe to assume this boaut would cruise around 30 mph @ 3-3.5K RPMs?

... The owner claims the boat does 62MPH on GPS.

Yeah, but what does it do when it is in the water and not on the trailer behind his truck.:D:D

I did do a search on MPH before I posted,

I saw some claims here of 50-55 mph for 19-20' bowriders with a 3.0 and 4.3 carbed....

I have been out of the game a while but seemed a little....well alot wrong.

I beleive Philster has this one pretty accurate.

I does depend upon the design of the hull. Bryants are very, very good boats and performance oriented. I believe the USCG plate on them have an additional warning calling them "performance boats".

Philster is in the ball-park but it might be possible to break 60. I do think its chances would be better with a 23p.
