Go to the FAQ in the maintenance section of the forum and look for waking up a sleeping engine. That will give you some good starting points.

I suspect that engine is not oil injected but am not sure. The oil mix would be 50 to 1 if it is not.

Just so you know what not to expect, that is a big boat for that engine. Don't expect to hit 40-45 MPH with it. Be happy if you are in the 32-35 MPH range depending what prop you have on it.

One way to improve performance and gas mileage is to add a set of Smartabs. You can learn about them by searching these forums and google the net.

Welcome aboard and happy boating.

Yeah not bad, I have the 85 on a 16' capri and had the prop thinned and everything. I managed a best of 43 gps, thinking about putting a jack on it but I'd have to redo the steering including a longer cable. I have some of those spring tabs, but I was saving them for a larger boat I have think maybe they are not for a little 16 like this. When I plane slowly the bow stays up, otherwise fun little boat that sucks gas. 5 gallons don't go too far. I get about 100rpm if I run synthetic gear lube.

Sho3boater,

43 is damn good from an 85 Capri but it is not an ocean racer! When the boat was designed, we were skiing at 25 mph. You will find that you get your best fuel economy around 4000 rpm or 25 mph.
