Now did you have to pay for that Don? :)

Yes I did. We already have 3. Two aftermarket, and one Merc original.

Besides, if it helps my crew of 2 trainees  do a better job, it will be worth it.

After posting and thinking. Most mechanics will still need the old style tool # 805475A1 because when you replace the gimbal bearing you need a pretty beefy tool to whack with your dead blow hammer to center the new bearing. And I'm not sure how well the new tool would stand up to that. That said I still like the new tool for alignments.

muc,

Please take a look at this tool on eBay...and tell me if this would be good for alingment, and gimbal installation (as advertised)?

RR, Sure it might work, but that isn't what this thread is about.

Re: New I/O engine alingment tool

as far as the old tool goes, i use a bit of grease on the end and that works great indicating whether the drive needs adjusting up or down or side to side
I just did the alignment for the first time and that trick made it easy.

Any update on this thread? Anyone used the new bar yet? Any chance of a tutorial on its use?

Re: New I/O engine alingment tool

Just got it today.
Here is what it looks like.

Don't have a boat in the shop with an outdrive that I can see how it works, but there are no sliding sleeves or anything else. Just a solid bar. Must be something in the lengths of the different ends. Will let you know when I get something positive. I bought the bar, but not going to buy a boat to check it out on.

Are you sure that the other end just isn't tapered differently to fit the Vazer drives?
Just looks like a double ended bar to me, 1 end to fit alpha/bravo, the other to fit something else.

Diameters are the same on the different steps. Lengths are different on B dimension. Not sure why yet.

I was really expecting a sleeve of some sort as reported by muc in the original post. But, there is no sleeve of any kind. I dunno ........ YET!

No one has been had. Not sure how this thing works or it's possibilities.

You have to understand, I do alignments on a regular basis. I put the bar in, spin it, clean things out, lube them up and check the alignment. I really can't say I ever looked an what part of the bar went where and when it was installed partially or fully into the drive.
Don't go crazy till I get a chance to see what this new bar does and how it works. Absolutely no instructions came with it, just the bar in a box with the Merc PN on the outside.
Near as I can tell at this point, is that only one person has bought this alignment bar by the Part number from Mercruiser, and that is me. So just hang in there till we get the rest of the story, OK?????

Re: New I/O engine alingment tool

I am very sorry; I have posted the wrong part number. When I saw Don?s post I thought --- that?s not a picture of the bar that I have been using. But because its launch time here in Minnesota I would forget all about it when I got to work. Well today I did an alignment check on a 36 Doral and grabbed the new alignment bar and saw that there was a part number on it. So I wrote it down and looked it up on MercNet. The part number of the tool I have been using is 91-840965T01. It is listed in the special tool catalog as a ITS Alignment Tool 91-840965A1 Used to align the engine to the integrated or standard Bravo transom assembly for sterndrive installation.
List price $138.00
So I would like to apologize to Don and anybody else who bought the part number I first posted. It was a mistake on my part to recommend a part number I was not sure of. And at $138.00 its not really a tool I would recommend to a boat owner or backyard mechanic.
Hope to have better luck next time Muc
